A wooden door in front of everything. A door
on my country. A door on the lake. My poems

prefer wooden hunting dogs. If I say there is a
door on my heart in the poem, then there is.

Now I can open this door. The door is a short
door though. I must kneel down to crawl in, drag

my body through with my wooden elbows. I bump
into my wooden mother who is also crawling

in my heart. She smiles so large at me that her
suffering lights up the tunnel. I can now see my

Victoria Chang's poetry amazes me. To say she has range isnt quite right, it is more an openness to evolution. The elements and preoccupation remain but the branch and expand. Read her new book The Tree of Knowledge.

Obit by Victoria Chang expertly weaves together the poet's experience of her father's Alzheimer's and mother's cancer and death with broader societal themes. Content warning for the above plus gun violence in schools. #sealeychallenge day 27 #poetry Publisher: Copper Canyon Press
Cover has all caps "OBIT [by] VICTORIA CHANG: POEMS" in white font overlaying the cover background which is made to look like the author's obituary repeated across the entire page of a light red tinted newspaper. Digital stickers indicate the book placed on the "national award longlist" and is a PEN America "Literary Award Winner"

day 18 of the #sealeychallenge finally picked up Obit by Victoria Chang. this collection was on my radar long before I even started meaningfully engaging with poetry. was very excited and fortunate to finally find it through one of my local libraries!
The front cover of Obit by Victoria Chang (published by Copper Canyon Press) features a faded purplish-red newsprint background. It displays a repeating grid pattern of a photograph of the author alongside text styled like a newspaper obituary. The text is an excerpt from one of the poems within the collection. Bold, white, all-caps sans-serif letters spell out the title, author name, and subtitle: OBIT, Victoria Chang, and Poems.

There are also digital stickers proclaiming that Obit is a Pen America Literary Award Winner and fhat it was longlisted for a National Book Award. a clumsy photo of a section of the poem "I am a Miner. The Light Burns Blue." by Victoria Chang
