I’m Just a Cat Wearing Human Clothes

and somehow everyone believed me.
I paid council tax. I bought milk.

I learned to answer emails with my paws.
All day I sit in rooms pretending

not to hear the birds conducting light
each one bright with the life I should be chasing.

Someone says pension. Someone says deadline.
Someone says have you considered mindfulness.

I have considered the radiator.
I have considered the softest chair.

I have considered knocking everything
breakable from the high shelf of my life

just to prove I was here, briefly.
At night I remove the shirt, the name,

the terrible shoes of being understood
and curl into the old emergency

of my body: all whisker, want, and kibble.
Forgive me. I was never aloof.

I was only waiting to be stroked
by a hand that did not ask

what I was doing with my life.

So much this @betarish.bsky.social. I think it is soft hope & breath made paper. It is part unpeeling part armour part wish part prayer. A mosaic that appears only when the pieces of us settle. Sometimes the poem asks; sometimes the reader answers; often the answer is simply the act of making.
