They disinvented the VCR. You might think that the reason we don't have VCRs anymore is because VCRs were supplanted by DVDs, PVRs and streaming, but that's not the case. They had it in for the VCR from the very start, and they never stopped trying to kill it. Eventually, they succeeded. 1/
A 1960s family living room in which a mom, dad and two kids are mesmerized by a cabinet-style TV. The image has been altered. The TV has an early 1990s VCR atop it. The TV screen is displaying a cross-sectioned human head with brains and spine on display. A huge fist has materialized in the room, with bloody spiked knuckle-dusters, smashing into the VCR. The oil painting over the sofa has been replaced with a pulp image of a male head, its cranium removed and replaced by a dome. Inside the dome is a red eight-segment VCR clock, displaying 12:00. The background in the painting is a tangle of cassette tape. The whole image's colors have been boosted, giving it an overexposed look.

Revoking participation in DMCA 1201 would greatly weaken the hold that the tech-bros have over us by opening our economies up for competition. In Canada we adopted DMCA under a previous round of tariff threats by the USA. Maybe it’s time we review everything we’ve conceded under duress.

I’ve wanted to visit the Boundary Waters for most of my life. After four days of paddling a canoe I barely scratched the surface. We paddled, we camped, I even caught a Northern Pike. I can’t imagine copper sulfide pollution ruining this wilderness. We're gonna fight this.

THREAD🧵🧵🧵 An underride crash, demonstrated in this video, is a particularly violent crash in which a car skids underneath a trailer, instantly severing the passenger compartment. The story of Marianne Karth underscores why we need to address this.

The image here borrows its title from Grant's 1868 presidential campaign slogan, "Let us have peace." Here's what Frederick Douglass had to say about that sentiment.
In the language of our greatest soldier, twice honored with the Presidency of the nation, “Let us have peace.” Yes, let us have peace, but let us have liberty, law, and justice first. Let us have the Constitution, with its thirteenth, fourteenth, and fifteenth amendments, fairly interpreted, faithfully executed, and cheerfully obeyed in the fullness of their spirit and the completeness of their letter.

Why the European left should always be pro-AC: - Ceding this popular issue to the right empowers them; in power they'll gut climate action far more than any AC "emissions." - AC runs on solar. Breaking news: The sun shines when it's hot. - AC saves lives. HEAT PUMPS FOR ALL! (AC is a heat pump...)

Air-to-air heat pump is air conditioning my home; drawing on power generated by solar panels; which also charge domestic batteries, which can keep powering the AC at night time. I can thankfully cool my home in this weather without importing any electricity, in fact I’m exporting excess to the grid.

From “The Simpsons” house genius John Swartzwelder, interviewed in The New Yorker by Mike Sacks
It's the only way I know how to write, darn it. But I do have a trick that makes things easier for me. Since writing is very hard and rewriting is comparatively easy and rather fun, I always write my scripts all the way through as fast as I can, the first day, if possible, putting in crap jokes and pattern dialogue-
"Homer, I don't want you to do that."
"Then I won't do it."Then the next day, when I get up, the script's been written.
It's lousy, but it's a script. The hard part is done. It's like a crappy little elf has snuck into my office and badly done all my work for me, and then left with a tip of his crappy hat. All I have to do from that point on is fix it. So I've taken a very hard job, writing, and turned it into an easy one, rewriting, overnight. I advise all writers to do their scripts and other writing this way. And be sure to send me a small royalty every time you do it.

A WHOLE CIVILIZATION
WILL DIE TONIGHT
My son needs lunch, and I have to put his backpack together, but a whole civilization will die tonight, so I'm wondering if they've closed their schools.
Like, a snow day, maybe, except instead of snow it's
"keep your children home so if you die, you die together" — instead of "well open back up once the plows have cleared" it's
"we don't know if we'll be here tomorrow, hold your babies tight."
It's just "talk" I'm told, which I've been told before.
"It's how the president makes his deals." But I've never heard anyone talk about other human beings this way, and I'm not certain I can look my son in the eyes if we all agree to stomach it one more time.
A civilization will die tonight, but as I zip up his backpack and kiss him off to school I think: if this is what we call leadership then I'm not entirely sure ours isn't already dead.

Poster:

"If you’re unemployed, it’s not because there isn’t any work.

Just look around: A housing shortage, crime, pollution; we need better schools and parks. Whatever our needs, they all require work. And as long as we have unsatisfied needs, there’s work to be done.

So ask yourself, what kind of world has work but no jobs? It’s a world where work is not related to satisfying our needs, a world where work is only related to satisfying the profit needs of business.

This country was not built by the huge corporations or government bureaucracies. It was built by people who work. And, it is working people who should control the work to be done. Yet, as long as employment is tied to somebody else’s profits, the work won’t get done."

✅ Raised crosswalks function as speed tables that physically compel drivers to slow down. ✅ This places pedestrians higher in the driver’s field of vision, while signaling a pedestrian-priority zone. ✅ They create a seamless, barrier-free path for all users by maintaining a level surface.
