V.disappointing - esp Heimir saying he used the 'wrong' word in genocide. Black armbands simply not enough. But we shouldn't lose sight of two things: (1) What Gavin Bazunu has just done. (2) The impact of the boycott campaign so far. It's working. Keep it up for 24 more hrs + see if they'll break.

A perfect description of the position the Irish team has been left in - and their manager, too, I would add. They are clearly weighing up what doing the right thing will mean. They should be heartened by the knowledge that history will judge them very well for not playing these games.

Today in Galway: a meeting of colleagues working in environmental humanities. If you're about, you're very welcome to drop in.
Environmental Humanities

12.00pm, Wednesday, 2 September 2026

Bridge Seminar Room (Room 1001), first floor, Hardiman Research Building

Environmental humanities at University of Galway has never been stronger: spanning cultural and language studies, history, philosophy, creative practice, and policy-focused research. Yet for all this energy, our work largely happens in parallel; we don't yet have a shared sense of what we could do, or be, together.

With that in mind, we would like to invite colleagues to an open meeting at 12.00pm on 2 September 2026 to discuss shared interests, areas of potential collaboration, and what we might fruitfully do together.

Our discussion will focus on three broad questions:

What are we already doing - and what are the overlaps we might not see?

What could we do together that none of us could do alone?

What would an environmental humanities collective look like, and what wouldn't it be?

All are welcome - from postgraduate researchers to established professors!

Dr Nessa Cronin, Prof Patrick Lonergan, Dr Tina-Karen Pusse, Dr Kevin O'Sullivan

Anne Dolan on the importance of begrudgery in Joe Lee's Ireland 1912-1985: "It's fundamental to what we might try to understand as class in twentieth-century Ireland. to what thwarts and what prohibits, to how what changed did change, and much more to what never changed at all" (in Grey, ed. 2024).
While some reviewers questioned whether 'the Irish', each and every one, did indeed beat time to a begrudger's rather than a fanatic's heart, I knew and understood well what a begrudger's heart might be. I come from a long line of them, and I have huge sympathy for the anger that comes from the pages of this book, because it prods where prodding hurts, because it still cuts closer than I would like to the bone. I had sat through enough Sunday dinners that invariably ended up marching out every acre of land that should have gone one way in a will rather than another, on who was and wasn't getting ideas above their station, on who you should vote for because, like their father before them, they'd always do you a good turn. What I learned about right and wrong was less about good and bad and more about respectability and disgrace, and to be seen to be respectable mattered above all else. And 1920s, 1930s, 1970s, 1980s, no matter - another generation with their own twist on the same 'thwarted ambition... frustrated hopes, shattered ideals'. I knew all of this and much more that went with it was part of what was meant by a begrudger's heart. It's fundamental to what we might try to understand as class in twentieth-century Ireland. to what thwarts and what prohibits, to how what changed did change, and much more to what never changed at all. And I have been struck by the challenge that Ireland 1912-1985 laid down and also by how loath as historians of independent Ireland we have

Saturday listening. I bought this in my late teens and saw Holmes DJ at Tivoli in Dublin about a year later. He played lots from this mix, along with the theme from Test Match Special. In hindsight, this CD influenced my tastes hugely; so eclectic, I'm still following the paths that lead from it.
