Some context for colleagues outside Ireland: over 300,000 people are on strike today. That's over 11 per cent of *all* people working in the state.

I love Sara Baume's writing. This is from her latest book, Opening Night (2026), p. 7, where she describes that part of west Cork where the artists & blow-ins live... "We are the people who choose to have plenty of time as opposed to plenty of money, and as a result few of us own property."
Sue and I and everyone I knew at the closing party, everyone I know in the region, are artists and blow-ins who have gravitated to the Irish Riviera for the bleak beauty of its scenery, and out of preference for its dawdling pace of life. We are the people who choose to have plenty of time as opposed to plenty of money, and as a result few of us own property. Instead, we rent houses that are too far-flung for the residential market and too shabby for the holiday market, or we build homes ourselves, laboriously, over the course of many years, camping on building sites, staging exhibitions in the empty shells of our future eco-houses, like Sue.

This initial conversation is a chance to talk about how all the work we're doing connects together. But the panel and series is also an opportunity to think about where we go next - as a University but also for the central role played by AHSS in all aspects of our lives. Here's the full programme:
What next for the humanities and social sciences? 15th October '26

What counts as culture - and who decides? 19th November '26

What moves across borders - and what gets left behind? 28th January '27

Why are some lives precarious - and what protects them? 25th February '27

Can culture help us face the climate crisis? 14th April '27

But the most incisive take was from Ken Early on @secondcaptains.bsky.social yesterday: this case is symptomatic of the arrogance of the wealthy that the rules simply don't apply to them. Even when they're caught, they still insist on the system somehow being "against" them. Sham City indeed.

A perfect description of the position the Irish team has been left in - and their manager, too, I would add. They are clearly weighing up what doing the right thing will mean. They should be heartened by the knowledge that history will judge them very well for not playing these games.

It's also *very* white. Phil Lynott is a good call, but at the very least I think Paul McGrath is more recognisable than most faces here. And what about Denise Chalia? Each would also give some sense of Irish Studies being broader than what this cover suggests.
