@zoesqwilliams.bsky.social nice piece today on the appalling Zia Yusuf. Bit wish you had also called out Justin Webb for his typically wet performance and complete failure to challenge any of Yusuf’s rubbish.

Kemi Badenoch wants to exempt the family home from inheritance tax. But that creates a perverse incentive for elderly people to *upsize* to save IHT. That could double the cost of the policy, and push £100bn+ from savings into housing. A 🧵 on bad tax cuts.

A large group of co-ordinated, masked men blockading a piece of significant infrastructure is a security threat and should be dealt with as one. There should also be serious questions about why police/intelligence services didn't pick up on it in advance.

I'm pretty sure that in recent memory Zia Yusuf's racism would have been high up the bbc news agenda - reported as racism- that the Conservative party would have attacked him for it and a Labour PM would go for him big time. Now it's all a bit 'well everyone's a bit racist now what can you do' 🤷‍♂️

“We are at war. The difference is, we're not joining the war. We're in the war.” Kemi Badenoch's spokesperson had, it is fair to say, a few issues in explaining her position on the Iran conflict after PMQs.
Speaking after PMQs, Badneoch’s spokesperson accused Starmer of seeking to “completely misrepresent our position”, arguing that Badenoch had never argued that the UK should join in the war.
She had, he argued, just called for the UK to allow the US to use British bases for the initial attacks on Iran, and that she now supported UK action against Iranian military action targeting British bases in Cyprus.
Asked if this was not the same as joining the war, he said: “We are at war. The difference is, we're not joining the war. We're in the war.”
Asked if Badenoch understood the goals of the war, the spokesperson said she did not receive the same intelligence briefings as ministers. Questioned as to how she could back a conflict without knowing its aims, he added: “We support our allies.”

Great to see the Conservatives wanting to reform student loans. Would like to see an account for Osborne replacing maintenance grants with loans in 2015. This has left poorer students with bigger debts vs richer ones for a whole decade, compounding inequality between rich and poor. It’s scandalous.
