36 years ago, the German Democratic Republic ceased to exist as a state and was absorbed into the Federal Republic of Germany. The two German states had been divided since 1949.

There are highlights and lowlights in Paul McCartney's and Wings' catalog. Ram is certainly a highlight. My personal fav Macca LP. Many great tunes on that one: Too Many People, Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey, the closer. And the dreamy, naive, mantra-like title track. Lovely, melodic, intimate record.

Halfway House, Fleshmarket Close still retains the old Edinburgh pub vibe, despite being in the middle of the tourist zone. It’s probably because it’s small, has no food and only offers traditional beers and spirits. Stewart Brewing 80/- ale

The Shameful Cost of Turning Child Abuse in Football Into Point Scoring Attacks on Rival Clubs
Using survivors’ pain to taunt rival supporters is not advocacy for victims. It is exploitation and the abuse of children must sit entirely outside football’s culture of bragging rights & retaliation.

The Beatles - Magical Mystery Tour (1967) #vinyl #german #np The audiophile’s pick of their catalogue. How they managed to make these sound like this, is a mystery (no pun intended) It’s mostly midrange but the presentation and sympathetic separation of instruments makes this a winner 10/10

Opening the doors at The Palm Houses
The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (RBGE) – the Botanics – is a place which is very special to everyone in the capital. This autumn the world-leading institution is marking a distinct moment in the Garden’s history with the opening of the newly redeveloped A-listed Palm Houses on 2 October.  This is part of the Edinburgh Biomes programme, and is hailed as the most ambitious restoration scheme in the history of the Botanics. As well as plants to see, there is a new visitor experience with films and other multimedia and multisensory digital tours.

Touch. 1st Eurythmics LP I bought (and the 2nd one they released in 1983). In hindsight, it's more complex and accomplished than their wonderful debut; the sunny, calypso-infused Right By Your Side, the legendary, melancholy-filled Here Comes the Rain Again and the groovy, underrated Paint a Rumour.

Associates - Sulk (1982) #vinyl Let loose in the studio with money to burn they produced what Mojo described as a “florid hysterical masterpiece” Some glorious pop that endures, alongside instrumentals and moody art rock, it still has the capacity to shock. A marketing nightmare though

The Associates - 18 Carat Love Affair (1982) #vinyl #12inch #45rpm Final single for the duo before Rankine left. The three songs on this encapsulate their output. A glossy pop dance song, a cover of a disco classic and an art rock instrumental that wouldn’t have been out of place on their debut LP

I remember listening to Achtung Baby for the 1st time in 1991. I was shocked. It was a complete reinvention of the band's sound. Bono's voice had changed and was less powerful but he adopted a more intimate/spoken singing style. The LP still holds up 35 years later. U2's crowning achievement, IMHO.

A feature of post-war German democracy has been that the left has traditionally had far more of a firewall to the far left than the center right has had with the far right. The central role of anti-communism in Cold War West Germany created a structural asymmetry that has not been reckoned with.
