The Republicans would like to have some freedom from Trump, but they won’t until we bring him down in popularity. That happened with Bush in 2005. It happened with Trump in 2017. When it happens, I am hopeful that our Republican colleagues will resume working with us. And I talk to them. One of the places is in the gym. When you’re on that bike in your shorts, panting away next to a Republican, a lot of the inhibitions come off.

Absolutely, utterly agree. Plus it devalues the actual, scientific AI work that's been quietly going on for decades. On the art side, I like how "plagiarism machines" is become a more common term. For LLMs like ChatGPT, maybe "bullshitting machines" might be a better term than AI.

I first learned Frankfurt's definition of bullshit as a technical term years ago, and it's such a useful concept. I include it in my philosophy courses when I talk about knowledge, but now with ChatGPT, it is even more useful. But it's still amusing reading peer-reviewed papers about "bullshitting."

Before the "yes, buts" there's a 300-char limit. 😉 There are issues with orthodoxy & biases in science, but, again, those are identified *by other experts*. The average NYT reader isn't going to have the insight that rocks the scientific community. Actual experts will have been there long before.

Yes! I regularly teach the Frankfurt's bullshitting, and as soon as LLMs hit the mainstream, that is exactly how I have been explaining them to people. They tell you what they think you want to hear with no regard for actual truth. They aren't even lying. They just have no concept of truth at all.
