This is a photo of some rocks and sand. It was taken earlier today, with a camera 247,000,000 km away. It was taken on Mars. And now you're looking at it on your screen.
Dusty, red rocks, and red soil. Darker soil in the middle of the image marks where one of the rocks has been displaced.

The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman by Laurence Stern (published 1759-1767) is a remarkable novel, full of full of strange absurdities such as this page depicting the plot line (accurately).
A page from the novel depicting the discursive plot in diagrammatic form. Four lines cross the page with loops, squiggles and back and forth zig-zags.

These fragments from a Roman villa in Spain are not from a mosaic but from a fresco. If you look closely you’ll see a grid of lines, many following the contour of the figures, much as tesserae do on mosaics. This trompe-l’oeil technique simulates mosaics. 1/ 🏺 1st-2nd c. Museo de Málaga 📸 me
Fragment of a fresco depicting part of a human face, mostly the eyes. Thin lines form a grid pattern, simulating the edges of tesserae.Fresco fragment showing a naked torso of a woman, her legs and pubic area covered in a red himation (cloak). Her right hand carries a basket laden with fruit, which look like giant globes of grapes. Grapevine leaves appear in the background. A Dionysian scene. My photo shows a silver shell-shaped container with an eight-armed octopus in relief at the centre of the lid. The arms of the octopus curl outwards across the ridges of the shell’s surface. This ornate shell container has a hinged lid and may once have been a cosmetic container . It is displayed on a clear stand in a museum case. Dimensions: 13.3 × 13.2 × 3 cm. It is part of the Silver Treasure from Paternò, Sicily, a hoard discovered in 1909, consisting of tableware and toiletries. Dated 4th-3rd century BC.
