This Alberta provincial government wants to do everyone’s job but their own. Poorly They don’t know what they are doing and don’t care. It’s not good governance they are after, it’s populist politics - which it seems they discard as soon as they wring people out of their money and attention.

The federal conservatives are behind this too. MP Diotte had organized multiple town halls and even sent out mailers. He was probably the politician pushing the hardest for this change.

At a minimum they should come out and oppose this. Even if you’re anti-affordability, why be a councillor if you think the city should get overruled

No, no they wouldn’t. People already don’t give a shit broadly. And what Ford is doing is fucking violence. Until the entire story framework of bike lanes as the villain and foil for why people perceive their lives to suck changes no amount of any kind of messaging will do jack shit at all

Make sure your councillor is on the right side of this. This is overriding elected officials to mandate unaffordability.

It’s the Alberta Government policy that property values can’t go down. You can’t afford a home? You want rent to go down? Too bad.

They have never put out a number publicly but it seems that they’ve got about 20% left and a lot of big projects left (95 ave and 107 ave are both expensive SUPs)

The “progressive” NDP voters gave cover for the UCP on bike lanes and now infill. A lot of people are comfortable with posting social justice instagram reels or putting up a lawn sign… but won’t be mildly inconvenienced.

It feels like we were so close to getting somewhat of a financially healthy growth pattern. We’ll be left holding the bag of sprawl, all so retirees don’t have to see a couple of three-story houses and some bike lanes.

And bonus #yegbike news for the NW centre area. The Kingsway crossing lights on the 113 st MUP are done so now seamless-ish to go north from downtown to Blatchford. The asphalt holes on the 111 ave route in front of Timmie's are patched, so maybe also the ones further east. And new concrete median
New concrete median along 111 ave at 130 Street blocking NB turns to the west.

Edmonton city council voted against having a minute of silence for people killed on our roadways. Not that surprising because “vision zero” is not their priority. It is easier to ignore how their choices lead to preventable deaths.

Keaton H @keaton-hawk.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
The UCP stepping in on traffic enforcement doesn’t help but we would still be failing without that. Almost none of our pedestrians deaths last year were speeders. Most were turning drivers at intersections the city could have improved.

This article gets into specifics policy failures but the same broad strokes are the reason Edmonton is failing at vision zero too. Failure to fix arterials, ever increasing car bloat and a general unwillingness from administration to meet the moment.

I love seeing the frequent bus routes overlaid. It’s such an under discussed part of our city. It’s pretty obvious that it’s been over serving degrowth communities. Infill is fixing that issue but we still need to expand the network.

Ironically, the city is only asking for 30 million for active infrastructure expansion primarily to add missing sidewalks. The specific thing this city admin official is arguing are too dangerous for cyclists to use.
