My robot vacuum has been exiled because ever since I moved it four feet away from its original location, it gets confused and stalls a foot from its base. But its name is Jackie McClean. (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jackie_...)

Personifying AI is bad. Personifying my robot vacuum who wishes to live amongst the dining chairs, despite the fact that it absolutely cannot, however, is funny.

Does my Speak-n-Spell feel pain when I type O-U-C-H? The jury is out. Philosophers and neuroscientists say that's fucking stupid, but I called a guy from the Center for Pretending that Household Electronics Are Sentient and he said there's no way to know for sure.

I also invoked @alexhanna.bsky.social and @emilymbender.bsky.social in response to the latest AI hysteria.
I must plug, once more, The Al Con: How to Fight Big Tech's Hype and Create the Future We Want by Emily M. Bender and Alex Hanna. I kept thinking about the book this week as more and more tech moguls and futurists or whatever are getting a new round of attention for saying that Al could very likely turn against us and destroy the world. Bender and Hanna advise us to ignore the hype over Al as some future weapon of mass destruction and to look at how it's already ruining the world: spiritually and intellectually and environmentally.
They urge us to stop thinking about Al as an inevitability, as so many institutions and organizations are doing (I see you, Publishers Weekly). Just as people are mobilizing across the country to protest the building of data centers, we can still come together and show the technofascists who currently run the world that we're not buying what they're selling. And that's what they're doing even now: selling.

Power grab
Omarchy should not matter. But sadly it does. As a power grab. If you don’t know what Omarchy is here’s the short summary. David Heinemeier Hansson, creator of RubyOnRails, owner of a software business and millionaire, decided a few months ago to go all in on Linux and – because that’s just his MO – […]

this is so fucking crazy. huge huge huge scoop www.404media.co/inside-proje...
In a dashboard available to the workers, human reviewers are able to select which “task” they want to take on. Once they click that, they are presented with the real ChatGPT user’s prompt. 404 Media has seen multiple real prompts but is not quoting any of them for source protection reasons. Some of the prompts indicate the ChatGPT user does not expect that a human may end up reading their conversation, because they ask ChatGPT to keep the content to themselves.

The reality is that just like every other industry AI has touched, AI is showing us that yes, even software engineers are a little lazy sometimes and make silly mistakes that would have been caught if someone just slowed down and wrote some fucking unit tests.

And of course OpenAI and Anthropic are running with it too. Rogue AI narratives easily let them off the hook for their sloppy (and embarrassing) development decisions. While also making it look to their eager investors like they're inventing god...

Meanwhile, the media and these wannabe whistleblowing ex-Anthropic / OpenAI script kiddies are running with "rogue AI" because, well, blade runner sells. Panic sells. And because the general public doesn't understand how modern software development works, we run with it too.

In recent cases, it's not that AI somehow "escaped containment" or "went rogue." That's anthropomorphizing at best. It's more like if a Boston Dynamics robot dog nudged open an already open door and walked in.

"Slowing down," then, doesn't necessarily mean literally slowing down AI production. It means making sure your testing environments are actually secure, that your agents have fail safes built in, and that admin access to critical systems isn't guarded by a plain text 4 letter password.

A fundamental problem with "oh it's useful for coding" is that "generating more software faster" has, if anything, negative marginal utility in itself. The world is not suffering from a software shortage. The world is suffering from a software quality crisis, which LLMs seem more likely to worsen.

Working on a piece for the newsletter, this is a data point - smart people keep shrugging and saying “communities don’t like data centers because of ‘vibes’” etc when it’s really that people are in fact smart enough to know they are bad faith neighbors. It is *entirely rational* not to trust them.

This is one of the most frustrating things with the rapid and unchecked deployment of generative LLMs for text/image/videos. Society was already suffering from a lack of trust, and having to wonder "did an AI make this" is just wholly bad for humanity.
