This is, more generally, a super cool thing I recommend trying when you have a free afternoon. It’s a Dog Library, except you don’t even need a card. Just show up and check out a dog. They’ll give you a bottle of water & some treats, even. bvspca.org/shelter-skip...

white evangelical Republicans whose experience of Catholicism is limited to people like JD Vance assumed that their allies on abortion would be their allies on everything and miscalculated so badly here. even the most conservative US bishops cannot function without their immigrant parishioners!

At special collections my class got to look at a copy of the 1886 jacquard silk book and a video game, both products of punchcards. Before our visit I had my students read Lubar’s “Do Not Fold, Spindle, or Mutilate.” Very very good stuff.
A table laid with the neo-medieval silk book open on a cradle and a long punchcard tape that programmed a video game.

I'm all better now, thanks. I only wish I'd gone sooner, I let my illness spoil the end of my trip because America has trained me to wait until I'm really sure I need help in case the care is expensive.

I went the NHS emergency room in London over the weekend, it was free. Free to anyone. I'd have been charged only if I was admitted to the hospital. A cart in the waiting room went by me with some nice sandwiches, and I chose one. Before I could try to pay, the cart moved on. Sandwich also free.

Absolutely LOVE the floral initials in this copy of the works of Apuleius, one of the first books printed at Rome (by Sweynheym & Pannartz) in 1469. The initials apparently added in France, perhaps in the 1480s or 90s. @theulspeccoll.bsky.social Inc.2.B.2.1[1124].

Hello Bone Colleagues,
I have invented a new type of ankle and I'm very excited to show it to you. Early raccoon trials suggest a 60% increase in scurrying speed and dramatic increases in fine motor banditry. I know we are not supposed to create super raccoons, but I think you'll change your mind and professional ethics when you see how cute they are. I believe we are on the cusp of a new era in advanced human scurrying because if medical science has taught me anything, it's that improvements in raccoons correspond 1:1 to improvements in humans.

"... the manuscript’s folded sheets may have originally been piled on top of each other as “singulions” ... but were mis-bound in a more typical “nested” arrangement at some point in the mid to late 15th century." Something sensible about the Voynich manuscript?! Mirabile dictu! 😱 #MedievalSky

So turns out the answer to “if Franklin knew it was a helix why wasn’t it in her notes” turns out to be “because the famous photo was a second, better photograph she took for accuracy and all the useful notes stayed with the earlier flawed photo where she talks about it being a helix.”
