The stuff of schooling is a means to an end of cultivating human beings, but these goobers have subverted all of that because they think it's about answering math problems. We've completely lost the plot.

I don't think last night's result is a polling failure. I think 40% of Dems said they would vote for Hong and did. I think 25% of Dems said they were undecided and made up their minds for Crowley as they were walking into the voting booths.

I really think Hong has great odds in the general election but I'm terrified the Dems royally fumble it for her. I don't have any faith that they'll go all in behind her AND let her keep trusting her (thus far excellent) political instincts

Do these Rs actually suddenly realize that Trump is awful/they could be victimized by him, or is that just a good thing to say for why you're leaving the teach now? It's giving "I want to spend more time with my family" but also they might be actually dumb and have missed every sign!

Due to recent discussions: when I worked at a library, I was trained on how to politely but directly respond to unwanted sexual comments. Unfortunately commonly-marketed fantasies about librarians mean it happens a lot. Rehearse these. Be comfortable saying them forcefully, but politely.
Cordial but Firm Anti-Creep Phrases

”This is a [professional space] and I’d really appreciate it if you’d act accordingly.”

“I’m not interested in discussing my personal life.” AND/OR “I keep my personal and professional life separate, thanks.”

“I really don’t think that’s appropriate behavior/to say at a [professional conference]. Is there something else we can discuss?” OR phrase it as a rhetorical question: “Do you think that’s an appropriate thing to do/say at a [professional conference]?”

“That is not what I’m here for. Let’s change the subject.”

“what the cicada said to the black boy” is an opportunity for science and English to merge. Occasionally, a group of students will read “get you some wings, son / get you some wings” and be inspired to attempt flight. Grateful to Dr. Clint Smith for this. 28 poems for Black History Month day 4
what the cicada said to the black boy by Clint Smith ive seen what they make of you
how they render you a multiplicity
of mistakes
they have undone me as well
pulled back my shell & feasted
on my flesh
claimed it was for their survival
& they wonder why I only show my face every seventeen years
but you
you're lucky if they let you live that long i could teach you some things, you know have been playing this game since before you knew what breath was
this here is prehistoric why you think we fly?
why you think we roll in packs?
you think these swarms are for the fun of it?
i would tell you that you don't roll deep enough but every time you swarm they shoot
get you some wings, son
get you some wings

Empty stomachs for millions of kids and seniors thanks to the largest cuts to food assistance (e.g. SNAP) in US history.

Higher home electric bills driven by huge cuts to clean energy investments that fund most new power sources.

Runaway college costs and bigger student loans caused by billions of dollars being cut from loan, loan forgiveness, and Pell Grant programs.

More challenges to holding Trump accountable after Republicans slipped in a one-sentence provision that would make it extremely difficult for courts to hold Trump administration officials in contempt for violating court orders.

10,000 new ICE agents at a time the agency is arresting political opponents, defying court orders, and deporting US citizens.New attacks on the trans community as Republicans inserted a last-minute change banning Medicaid from covering gender affirming care.

Tax breaks for people buying gun silencers ("Who asked for this? The assassin lobby?" asked one Democratic lawmaker).

Millions of patients denied cancer screenings and reproductive care due to the defunding of Planned Parenthood and banning of abortion coverage under ACA insurance plans.

Poetry Foundation not fucking around with today's poem of the day www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/89897/...
A screenshot of Maggie Smith's "Good Bones"
Life is short, though I keep this from my children.
Life is short, and I’ve shortened mine
in a thousand delicious, ill-advised ways,
a thousand deliciously ill-advised ways
I’ll keep from my children. The world is at least
fifty percent terrible, and that’s a conservative
estimate, though I keep this from my children.
For every bird there is a stone thrown at a bird.
For every loved child, a child broken, bagged,
sunk in a lake. Life is short and the world
is at least half terrible, and for every kind
stranger, there is one who would break you,
though I keep this from my children. I am trying
to sell them the world. Any decent realtor,
walking you through a real shithole, chirps on
about good bones: This place could be beautiful,
right? You could make this place beautiful.
