Oof, this is such a lot for you all, but sounds like he’s definitely in the right place. Sending you a lot of sympathy.

It’s a tough call but s19 might be my most favourite. Stevie and Jason are one of the best teams of all time. I love all of them.

Astonishing to hear people say they'd rather asylum seekers drowned than be saved by the RNLI. Next comes letting people die in burning hostels rather than be saved by the fire brigade and letting people get kicked to death in the street rather than be saved by the Police. Don't platform this hate.

Sending you so much sympathy. I have been through very similar circs (including father with dementia who died first) and you have nailed so many good-things-to-know. But I’m so sorry you have been through all of this too. Whatever else it is, it is a fvcking LOT. Courage and strength to you.

I was in Greece the week after the queen died in 2002, and a very nice American on one of our day trips asked me how I was doing “after everything”, *concerned face*. Think she was nonplused by my casual “oh absolutely fine thanks”.

also, the public salience of trans girls playing sports is incredibly low. the public salience of say, data centers, is incredibly high. strange that a “popularist” cannot see this. almost as if “popularism” is a way to smuggle ones preferences in to politics as somehow objective.

There’s a lot I miss about the more innocent internet of the 1990s (or the 1900s, if you’re Gen Z), but one key message which I wish would come back is ‘don’t feed the trolls’. Ragebait fuels the internet and I don’t know when we forgot to ignore it and not fall for it.

The treatment of Jason Arday was massively out of proportion to his faults. People who have committed terrible crimes have received less scrutiny, yet I don't believe anything he did or said even crossed the threshold of criminality. How many of us would have survived what he was put through? 🧵

This should be a day of shame for my profession. Unfortunately, most of the media is not renowned for self-reflection. It may be relentless in exposing other people's faults (but in most cases only the faults of those who might threaten the status quo). It is much less prepared to confront its own.

I know you all hate the emergency alert about disposable barbeques. But yesterday I watched a man at our hotel breakfast set fire to a toaster by trying to toast a croissant - despite multiple signs telling him not to. Today he tried again. So, you know, calibrate for the average person.

5. It won’t all be awful. We uncovered several boxes of surprise photos last week which we haven’t even had time to look explore properly yet, but which felt like a real gift. Here’s some family snaps of a holiday in the New Forest in the 80s (I am the tiny girl). Miss you, Mum and Dad. ❤️
Three photos, all in the New Forest. Top left, two small boys are playing in water. Right, a father is holding his small daughter’s hand. Bottom, a mother is holding her daughter’s hand while her son smiles at the camera.

Quick moment to admire this watercolour sketch (one of hundreds) I found of Mum’s last week.
A watercolour sketch of a bridge over a canal in front of a building in Venice.

… and in the end it was all collected by a local art teacher who couldn’t have been more delighted by and grateful for it all. (That was a rare high point of those whole experience.)

3. Ask around locally for any takers of specialist items you don’t want and can’t give to charity but seems a crime to throw. Last week we packed up about 8 boxes (and lots of stuff outside of boxes) of my Mum’s art supplies. I asked around for any charities or schools who might appreciate it all…

Bigger knackered electrical goods - a microwave and a printer - went into the massive electrical recycling bin, while everything smaller was received with pleasure by an actual human being. Also I think a lot of electrical retailers have electrical recycling drop off points too.

2. If you are lucky enough to have a car (or, in my case, a supportive partner with one) then see if your nearest tip will take electrical recycling. Ours does and happily receives boxes and boxes of old cables and small knackered electrical goods.

They are legit! I was sceptical too! But they fully check out. In a world where you have to make appointments to take things to charity shops and they (perfectly reasonably) won’t accept things they can’t sell, having people come and take away boxes from your doorstep has been a godsend.

As someone wading through this right now with our parents’ house, a small but heartfelt plea to consider hugely decluttering your home if/when you have the ability to do that and ideally long before your offspring have to do it instead (when they are weighed down by extra things like grief).

I am deep into slowly clearing the house where our parents lived for 50 years and three of us grew up. It’s so much stuff. So much. While also being several lifetimes of memories. It’s incredibly hard, and has made me seriously reevaluate how much stuff we need in our own home.

I've had to unfriend a few fans lately, all for the same reason. They made ridiculing, unkind, and in some cases outright cruel comments about pictures I posted of young women cosplaying Jessica.
More than a person, Jessica is a state of mind. To play Jessica, you need self -confidence, a sense of humor, and a Jessican -attitude-. There is no such thing as a Jessica cosplayer being too short, too flat chested, too heavy, too thin, too unattractive, too black, too Asian, or even too male!!! All Jessica, any Jessica, every Jessica is good Jessica.
I'm not giving any warnings or second chances. A single disparaging comment on a Jessica cosplayer, and I'm throwing you out of the rainbow colored Toontown Tent.

I desperately don’t want it to be Root, I can’t face how sombre and weighed down he’ll be. Helicopter in Anderson to shepherd them through the Pakistan series and tell Brook he’s got to get his act together before South Africa?

In accordance with ancient tradition, our next Prime Minister is announced to the nation while standing between a furry and a man with a bin on his head.
A victorious Andy Burnham MP (24,937 votes), as the result of the Makerfield by-election is announced, flanked by defeated candidates Count Binface (a bloke in a vaguely sci-fi costume with a large bin for a helmet; 95 votes) and Robert Pownall (who is in a full body fox costume, holding a sign reading "Protect British Wildlife"; 18 votes). There are some other candidates there just out of shot but that's not important right now.
