This is a fun time to work in AI if you are on multiple people's list of "emergency women to invite to an event when you remember that not everyone in the world is a man under 40"

If we look for a moment at Elon Musk, for instance, you can see the harm he's inflicting is not because he has developed super-advanced technologies beyond everyone's wildest dreams, but because he uses the power he has carelessly and believes he can act above the law. That is the danger.

Does anyone know this outlet or who's behind it? It's the only media counting analysis I can find, but the whole thing stinks really really bad of AI slop which would be an extremely self-destructive pathway to take for this type of analysis that requires accuracy and rigour

Marie Claire actually left a prompt from an AI in one of their recent articles. While there’s still some great journalists and publications left, this is utterly shocking. No wonder I’m trying to pivot.

#CriticalAI4.1, Professor James Dobson turns to the work of interdisciplinary AI scholar Nina Beguš to uncover the ways humanists can respond to and make sense of gen AI technologies. read.dukeupress.edu/critical-ai/...
Instead, Beguš shows the possibilities in a deep archive of cultural representations of artificial intelligence. “Representations are too powerful,” she writes, “to be disregarded as mere dreams, fantasies, and fictions; they give us important information on our relation to a particular technology, including possible ways to relate differently and to choose from the possibilities we had created” (211). This is the major contribution of Artificial Humanities. The book joins many critiques of anthropomorphization in disputing “the idea of a machinic intelligence as a humanlike intelligence” (210). It stands out in strongly arguing that fictional narratives provide us with warnings about the inevitable disappointments and disasters when we conflate the two. The primary goal of artificial humanities is to reveal through a reading of literature the resolved contradictions, the knowledge that we've always had about the desire for a humanlike intelligence and its inevitable traps and failures.

Dear Helen Hayes MP,
I am writing to urge you to sign the Early Day Motion 240, rejecting the draft EHRC code of guidance.
Now that the code of guidance has been seen, it is clear that it does not function to ensure that trans people can live their lives free from harassment and discrimination. Instead, it sets up situations where trans people will be asked to out themselves repeatedly in order to access services. I am a trans woman, and I have faced the choice of - how well am I passing today? What toilet should I use to minimise the chance I get harassed? It's a high stakes decision! And it's now higher stakes, as there's now signals from the government that it is right to question people who you think might be using facilities which don't match the gender you parse. This is not the way to a world where trans people are not harassed.
The code also suggests that where a trans person cannot comfortably use either gendered facility, they should be provided alternative facilities. The cost of constructing these facilities is estimated to be £300 million - where they can be constructed at all. This government claims to prioritise economic growth, and yet is imposing huge costs on business (businesses in sectors already under a lot of strain) in order to solve... well, the practical problem is that transphobes might sometimes have to share a space with trans people. No concrete harms have been identified, there are no cases to point to of actual harms having occurred. The highest profile case about changing rooms (the Sandie Peggie case) was specifically about the harassment that a trans person was subjected to, not about harms caused by the trans person. And, in any case, it would not be affected by the EHRC ruling, as the EHRC ruling is about services provided to the public, not about conditions for employees.
So, in short: the new code is both cruel and expensive. It doesn't solve any real problems. I urge you to reject it.
Yours sincerely,V Buckenham

The government’s suggestion that rolling out 20 minute courses on writing “AI“ prompts, sponsored by Google, Microsoft and Amazon, is somehow comparable to the founding of the Open University (the Wilson government‘s, & Jennie Lee’s, proudest achievement), is an insult to our human intelligence.
This is the biggest targeted training
programme since Harold Wilson started the
Open University (note).Open to all UK adults online, taking as little
as under 20 minutes, the courses will givefounding partners - Accenture, Amazon, Barclays, BT, Google, IBM, Intuit, Microsoft, Sage, SAS and Salesforce to take the Al Skills Boost programme to the next level and upskill 10 million workers with Al skills
