Listening to Jason Benetti call New York v. Boston instead of entertaining Tigers fans by, say, pontificating about why we say Bad Axe is in the Thumb but don't say Mackinac is in "the bird" is just sad, man.

I started my first teaching job the same week it came out, so I never really knew Pearl Jam's album No Code. (I was busy, okay?) Did you know it has a song by Stone Goddard and he sings it?! And it's awesome?! I thought it was some Mission of Burma cover or something. It rules! youtu.be/54nPK_f-IYw

Dan Ackroyd in the old Saturday Night Live skit where he plays a slimy toy company executive explaining that recalls aren't their fault and pushing their new product, bag of glass.

The first time I saw an analysis of Nielsen ratings that included actual number of TVs changed my life. It was something like "smash hit Friends ranked first again this week with 33,000 viewers," and my brain immediately shouted "SO 1% OF AMERICANS? 1%?!?!"

Me, reading: A four-page poem? I'm sorry or congrats but who has time to read all that? Me, writing: Every word of this five-page poem is necessary to building the whole, and this is my masterpiece that everyone will love.

Whoa Nelly this Russell Brakefield book is great. There are number of poems worth shouting out, but this one really grabbed me earlier.
Cover of Irregular Heartbeats at the Park West by Russell BrakefieldJames Tate's Bookshelf
How does the tiger feel about his needle teeth?
And how about his stripes? He stalks at twilight between the dusty hardcovers.
What tooth-shaped piece of me is missing that I would steal this snarling, plastic figurine?
That I can't face the after party-tea candles
in the yard, cloves and small talk, white tablecloths, an old-fashioned weeping in my fist? No ideas
but in things, and the hunter in my pocket brings me closer, I suppose, to an idea of myself
I can stand. In the living room, I run my fingers down its back and think what power
it might bring me. The power to birth a menagerie, word by word,
and spiral each species until the world is reflected-the flaws and tricks, drool
dripping down the jowls, stomach flayed open and everything there exposed.
Astonishing, what we will do to be the maker and not the made,
what we will tell ourselves about ourselves to feel alive. A poem I read years ago
23comes back to me in a flash—a tiger
has the same number of bones in it as a monkey—
long lines stalking me in the open grass.
My poems are like stones, by contrast,
dropped to the bottom of a clear pond, the water's surface left untouched.

The intricate life between highway and suburbs groans at its borders.
A photo of a belt of wildness along I-696, the expressway north of Detroit. This stretch of nature, left alone between subdivisions and the road, is about 50 yards wide and includes trees, grasses, sumac, other bushes, and more. It is, simply put, gorgeous.

Photo from the driver's seat showing the rain-covered windshield. It's actually supposed to rain harder instead of letting up. I would say something like "couldn't it have done this yesterday instead of today?" except it rained some yesterday also.

Hi #AskDV, any suggestions for querying a novel that doesn't exactly fit the kinda standard publishing genres? E.g., many agents specify SFF or such, but I have a literary sports (🏀) novel not seeming to fit well in any categorical "bucket," so to speak. How limiting is that to my querying?
