#SmallPoemSunday, Horse Eye Edition h/t @pounk.bsky.social, who brought this poem, from Aracelis Girmay’s GREEN OF ALL HEADS, to our reading group (cc: @dianalog.bsky.social, @kasylongauthor.bsky.social, @anitaholmes.bsky.social) this month @tomsnarsky.bsky.social
AWAKEN YOUR WILL
Many years from now, the birds screamed
To each other in the lessening night
And something shook me from the dream
Of horses. Before I could close,
One had run out into the dry, hushed bed
Of the river whose bank
We laid our sleeping bags beside
Following the teacher's printed map.
The horse made a sound,
His left eye shone purple
Against the flashlight light.
How close, its hooves.
Years from now, but it is
Calling to me
Like a so cket
Of sight:
Awaken your will
As when everyone was here.

This photo was taken in 1911 using glass plate technology by Herbert Ponting who was part of Scott's Antarctic expedition, The composition and detail are exquisite with the band of white snow/ice creating a perfect frame around the two people and the ship in the distance Iconic imo
Photograph from 1911 taken by Herbert Ponting whilst with Scott's Antarctic Expedition

The monochrome photo is taken from within a cave. The walls of the cave are made of ice. The cave entrance is in the mid distance with two figures standing looking out towards a distant ship. Between them and the ship there is first a 'beach' of ice before the sea itself. The ship could be up to 800 metres away

What makes the photo so special is that where the figures are at the cave entrance there is a band of very white snow and ice (contrasting with the comparatively dark inside of the cave) that creates a stark framework in which the men and the ship are captured. It is made even more dramatic by the fact that the cave entrance is at least 30 metres high and is in the shape of a distorted elipse with the tail sloping off to the right at the top of the elipse

The photo being in monochrome in a largely white environment makes the photographers skill all the more laudable

Now, I’ve never read The Hunger Games, only seen the movies, I get it. However Georges Perec’s ‘W or The Memory of Childhood’ is one of my favorite books and that’s also a little bit on the nose.
The multiplicity of these Laws, their detail, and the great number and variety of the opportunities thus created, could lead one to believe that it really takes very little for an Athlete to become an Official, as if the Laws of W, by asserting the wish to reward high sporting achievement as well as steady service and just good luck, wanted to give the impression that Athletes and Officials belonged to the same Race, to the same world; as if they were all one family united by a single goal, the greater glory of Sport alone; as if there were nothing that really separated them: the contestants compete and redouble their efforts on the cinders; thronging the stands, on their feet, the crowd of their comrades cheers them on or boos them down; the Officials sit in the Stalls, and the same spirit moves them, the same combat thrills them, the same flame burns in them!

But we know the world of W well enough to grasp that its most lenient Laws are but the expression of a greater and more savage irony. The apparent leniency of the rules governing promotion to official positions always comes up against the whimsicality of the Hierarchy: what a Timekeeper proposes, a Referee may refuse; what a Referee promises, a Judge may forbid; what a Judge proposes, a Manager disposes; what one Manager grants, another may disallow. High Officials have all the power; they can sanction, just as they can veto; they can uphold the choice of fate, or choose a different fatality, at random; they make the decisions, and they can change them at any time.

while i am not an academic i did see this coming and post about it on bluesky, which is why i am quoted in this article
Moser tells Rolling Stone that to even claim LLMs "hallucinate" fictional publications misunderstands the threat they pose to our comprehension of the world, because the term "implies that it's different from the normal, correct perception of reality" But the chatbots are "always hallucinating," he says. "It's not a malfunction.
A predictive model predicts some text, and maybe it's accurate, maybe it isn't, but the process is the same either way. To put it another way: LLMs are structurally indifferent to truth."

Smthing that's been grating on me *big time* lately: "I listened to these 10 albums so you don’t have to" is less a hook than ever and is starting to feel very literal, almost reading as an instruction: "Consume someone else’s pre-chewed takeaway, not the work. Your time is better spent elsewhere."

A poem appears in black text on a white background. The poem reads:

"The song must be cultural, confessional, clear
But not obvious. It must be full of compassion
And crows bowing in a vulture’s shadow.
The song must have six sides to it & a clamor
Of voltas. The song must turn on the compass
Of language like a tangle of wire endowed
With feeling. The notes must tear & tear,
There must be a love for the minute & minute,
There must be a record of witness & daydream,
Where the heart is torn or feathered & tarred,
Where death is undone, time diminished,
The song must hold its own storm & drum,
And shed a noise so lovely it is sung at sunset
Weddings, baptisms & beheadings henceforth.

from AMERICAN SONNETS FOR MY PAST AND FUTURE ASSASSIN (Penguin, 2018)"
