If Childhood Were according to Berries and Flowers

My name would be written in the book
of life: clusters of foxberries and trumpet vines,

white and purple clovers, dandelions,
blackberries and dewberries, the tiny

wild strawberries and bittersweet—even
its yellow flowers I could put in my mouth,

fill my hands with purple archangel and henbit;
we made clover chains for our wrists and hair,

picked mullein for the sheer softness
of its leaves; I thought beauty and delight,

goodness, ended there, in the woods, in the
yard—now I know even guidebooks disagree

on what to catalog: I search them all
for purple deadnettle, which I remember

every spring while forgetting its name.
What if we could stay with the flowers—

what if beauty and truth were all
there were? Keats would have loved

my unmolested childhood. The mayapples
lifting. The cherries we hung from our ears.

Third, resilience isn't just about responding to or getting through a difficult experience. Resilience also manifests in a form that's more about being than doing. This aspect of resilience helps us stay grounded and settled, no matter what happens to us. It enables us to sustain and protect ourselves and each other over time. It's a way for our body to access possibility and coherence, regardless of the circumstances. It's not so much a response as it is a way of showing up, a way of tapping into the energies that surround and move through everything in our world.
Resilience can be built and strengthened, both individually and collectively. We African Americans took pains to build resilience in ourselves and our children for many generations; if we didn't, we wouldn't have survived. For 400 years, with many successes and many failures, we have sought to counter new and old trauma with both the resilience we were born with and the resilience we grew and taught each other to grow.
I often tell people that resilience is not a thing or an attribute, but a flow. It moves through the body, and between multiple bodies when they are harmonized. It is neither built nor developed; it is taken in and expressed as part of a larger relationship with a family, a group, a community, or the world at large.
Notice how this takes place not just in the cognitive mind, but in the body, and in the minds and bodies of others, and in the collective body of people who care about us.
Here are some especially good pieces of news about resilience: recent findings in neuroscience reveal that the human brain always has the capacity to learn, change, and grow. It is genetically designed to mend itself. While trauma can inhibit or block this capacity, that effect is not permanent; once the trauma has ceased and been

MD: That's true. But allow me only to correct the concepts.
Before, we believed that poetry participated in the struggle; today I don't think that it has an immediate function. Poetical influence is very slow; it's a question of accumulation.
Distance allowed me to soften my tone. It allowed me to observe myself, to observe the occupation, the landscape, and the prison, by adding to it a measure of sanctity; poetry has been transformed into a cult of beauty, a cult liberated of all obligation. To disappear elsewhere is a liberation. The less they know about you, the better you know yourself. It's also a question of maturity. I was reading more, I was listening to European poetry. I learned to forgive.
For, in the end, we are all exiled. I, and the occupier, we both suffer from exile. He is exiled in me, and I am the victim of his exile. On this earth, we are all neighbors, all exiled, the same human destiny awaits us, and what unites us is the need to tell the history of this exile.
Q: Is there not an idealization of distance? Is there not a price to pay for exile?
MD: Exile is paid with nostalgia, and with the feeling that one is marginal. But compensation comes in the form of creation of a world parallel to reality. And it is distance which allows that.
Geographical distance also creates the time of the poem, which does not need any longer to react immediately.
Q: In your poetry in recent years, you orient yourself towarc metaphysics. In the poem, "Hoopoe" for example, the love of God becomes a metaphor for the love of the native land: "And no-place becomes the place."
