I have two sections of books — the read and the unread — but each section exists in multiple places throughout the house. Do I frequently spend significant time searching for a book? Yes. Am I sad about that? Not at all.

RIVERWORK, a novel by Lisa Robertson“A book's own profligate purpose is to be rhythmically reread, to draw others to its pages, which have been consulted and pored over umpteen times already in the course of its production, by editors, proofreaders, typesetters, and so forth. The author has reread it quite to death. But it's the slower irregular rereading, framed by the reading room, the archive, the library, that most activates a book and its secret message. A book's melancholy purpose, I considered, is to never remain itself, but to enter ongoing metamorphosis in the hands of strangers. There are styles of reading or research that pass from reader to reader, like cuts of jackets, or jargons. These were the thoughts I entertained as I ironed the linen pillow slips.”

So there, AI, Proust says you can never write a good book.
“So it is that a well-read man will at once begin to yawn with boredom when one speaks to him of a new "good book," because he imagines a sort of composite of all the good books that he has read, whereas a good book is something special, something un-foreseeable, and is made up not of the sum of all previous masterpieces but of something which the most thorough assimilation of every one of them would not enable him to discover, since it exists not in their sum but beyond it.”
