My friend asking me the hard questions asked - what have been some of your greatest friendship disappointments or sadnesses in recent years?
Oh man- That is terribly difficult. I would say my best friend Jason dying suddenly would be the most tragic and painful. Still, I was thinking about that just this weekend, and the difference between a person dying tragically and a person just leaving by choice is that one is a choice and one, of course, isn't. I remember the last time Jas and I talked; we were both laughing and said,
"Love you, talk tomorrow." And then there was no tomorrow. This year I lost two friends who decided they didn't want to be my friends anymore, and that | just wasn't worth being friends with. Last night I thought about that and how my former 1st- and 2nd-graders used to have broken hearts over stuff like someone choosing not to be their friend-for whatever reason.
But I would tell my little students, "You're amazing and wonderful, and the right friends are going to come into your life one day." And they would cry, and I would hope their little hearts could bear it. Knowing they shouldn't have to. Knowing we are all those little ones.

I knew that the universe wouldn't let me have you. It's cruel that way.
How it gives you something worth keeping but tells you you're not good
enough to keep it. How it starts a boiling in your gut but eventually
leaves you starving like a bone plucked naked of the meat. This poem is the poem
about how I lost you before l even had you. If love were something other than love
it would be a spill on the floor. How it ruins the carpet. How we do our best to
clean it up before it stains. How it stains anyway.

Poem for October 2nd, 2026 For my sister who lost her partner The Glass — We began measuring life by Shadows, and Sunsets, Sunrises, and Seasons and maybe not that day or the next/ It was some time after/ It could have been any day But the sky was slightly blue and still and really quite beautiful

The Glass
My sister stood in the doorway —of the kitchen frozen in time on the day the man she loved died
The Glass he had once drank from shattered at her feet
Tears streamed down her face
I draped a towel over the glass
She took my hand and walked with me
We began
Measuring life by Shadows, and Sunsets, Sunrises, and Seasons And maybe not that day Or the next
It was some time after Sitting in dark days among
Takeout containers
Anxiety attacks
Binge-watching shows
Eating ice cream cones out of a box
That one day came
It could have been any day
But the sky was slightly blue and still and really quite beautiful
She stepped forward into the light
And decided to live

Once in a While I Am Reminded
I am not at the center of anything. Seen at a distance I am hardly seen. Excruciating, how here 1 am, how little
it means. I use my mouth to make sounds which approximate my innermost thoughts but often bungle it. I use my eyes when I need to be understood. Sometimes I tell the truth but only when I think I'll be valued for being interesting instead of good.
I marvel at what I call my life-ambulances, sparrows, clouds passing definitively by-amazed that it doesn't know it's mine at all, the minor characters don't look up, the narrative sags, and I each moment wondering if this is when the real story starts.
