Mark Zuckerberg tells investors that his AI push is a huge success. But when it files its taxes, Meta tells the IRS its giant data centers are an experiment that might fail. Why? Because calling them an experiment lets Meta claim a tax credit meant for real research.

Coiled in a terrifying S-curve of raw kinetic power, a crouching tiger rends its bloody prey in this explosive 1861 woodblock print (nishiki-e) by the iconoclastic master Kawanabe Kyōsai (1831–1889).
Titled Shōshiki Mōko Shasei-zu ("True Picture of a Fierce Tiger Drawn from Life"), the composition breaks radically from the static, idealized tiger depictions of traditional Japanese art. Kyōsai renders the beast with visceral anatomical mass—its sinewy back arched high, claws digging into the ground, and wide, luminous yellow eyes locked in a fierce, feral glare. Intensely black, rhythmic stripes ripple across its tawny hide, while its long, banded tail sweeps upward, breaching the border of an unfurled blue scroll containing explanatory text by the celebrated gesaku satirist Kanagaki Robun (1829–1894). Behind the beast, a heavy dark grid evokes the iron bars of a traveling menagerie.

The historical genesis of the print lies in the Bakumatsu period’s sudden opening to the West. In 1860, a live tiger was brought to the treaty port of Yokohama by foreign traders—an exotic spectacle that captivated Edo’s public. While earlier painters like Maruyama Ōkyo or Kano masters had been forced to paint tigers from imported pelts, domestic cats, or Chinese ink scrolls, Kyōsai famously rushed to view the live animal, executing rapid life sketches (shasei). This direct observation allowed him to capture not merely the form of the tiger, but its terrifying vitality, predatory breath, and unbridled ferocity. Above the main scene, a red header banner incorporating pseudo-Western Romanized lettering reflects the nascent visual influence of Yokohama-e and Japan’s fascination with global exotica.

Aesthetically, the work represents a startling departure from tranquil classical sensibilities, leaning instead into sōbi—a sublime, awe-inspiring grandeur rooted in terrifying power. Kyōsai juxtaposes the graphic violence of the tearing flesh and crimson blood with immaculate printmaker's craft, achieving a dark, dramatic iki (stylish intensity) through bold contours and dense pigment.

this iconic advertising copywriter named Kathy Hepinstall Parks died over the weekend and I wanted to share something from her website I thought Bluesky would like
Why should I write better when a machine can do it for me?
Because actually no one can do it for you, because your voice is unique among all the people on earth. Siri never petted a horse's neck. Alexa has never been ghosted by the captain of the football team. But you have lived, your heart is beating, you have suffered, and you have something important to say. It's a human's job, to use words, and whatever job you give to a machine, that part of your brain goes dark. Maybe it's worth it when it comes to remembering phone numbers and directions, but when that part of your brain that uses words goes dark, that's a vast area that's very close to your soul. Don't let some internet platform convince you that what you have to say and create isn't worthwhile. Words are the echo of your soul. Honing that echo matters.

From a guide to art shipping I wrote in 2023: www.artnews.com/art-news/iss...
You get what you pay for

Ferrer was blunt when offering his top advice is for new buyers of art: It’s worth using a professional packing and shipping company instead of Federal Express.

“They will get there as quickly as possible and quicker than anyone else, but whether it arrives in the same condition as it left in is that is just the question,” he said with a laugh.

Ferrer said the worst thing a buyer could do is spend a significant sum for a piece and then cheap out on its transport home, setting themselves up for damage, disappointment, or even possible loss.

“You want them to be in the same condition that you saw them on on the booth and in the art fair. It’s worth the investment,” he said.
