Drumcree was not just a ‘march’ it was an annual extended period of fear that threatened to destabilize the entire province and resulted in a significant number of deaths. No one should forget that the catalyst for the march being halted was the deaths of the Quinn boys in their firebombed home.

Last year we read the names of the dead children, on the mass grave site. It took over an hour. The trees you see are fast-growing pines, planted by the nuns in the mid 90s, around when people started asking questions about the missing children. The trees prevent forensic examination of the grounds.

I attended the unveiling of a memorial to the dead women & children of Sean Ross Abbey where 1,090 "illegitimate children" died over a 37-year period, many of malnutrition. The nuns still own the land so their permission had to be sought to erect a memorial to their victims. This is Ireland in 2026.
