This is a great video by @michaelburns.bsky.social on the Chicago Pope's encyclical broadside against Silicon Valley capitalism. I may end up just reading this thing. Where does one get a papal encyclical, anyway?

Today, I signed an Executive Order temporarily repealing bedtimes in the City of New York so that kids of all ages can watch our team in the NBA Finals. As Mayor, you’re forced to make many difficult decisions. This was not one of them. Go Knicks.

President of MIT not mincing words today in @statnews.com www.statnews.com/2026/05/27/s...
So let me say it as clearly as I can: Without basic scientific research, supported by the kind of farsighted public investment that allows large-scale, undirected, curiosity-driven inquiry, the scientific pipeline will run dry.
In daily life, people may not feel the effects right away, or even in 10 years. But we will feel it. And when someone we love needs therapies that could have emerged but didn't or when other countries now
investing in science can launch new science-based industries or run their societies on vast resources of fusion energy or reap the benefits of quantum computing power or advanced medical breakthroughs, America will wish it sustained its leadership in scientific research here and now.
Sally Kornbluth is the president of MIT.

The world’s largest sand battery got through Finland’s harshest winter in years. 2,000 tonnes of sand, heated to 500-600°C by cheap power, feeding district heating in Pornainen. And it worked. Result from one install: oil down 100%, emissions down 70%. Industrial process heat is the real prize.

Conservatism is ideologically upstream from where MAGA is now. It requires some form of social control over the “others” which inevitably leads to prosecution of the “others”. There will always be “others” under conservatism because the way of life being conserved must be under attack for viability.

This is weirdly the most “celebrated” Easter that I can remember. Not a Federal holiday, so it always seems to just pass by. This year, I’ve received many more unsolicited “he is risen”’s than I care for. I think folks might be buying the apocalypse narrative.

You can’t build for the future by using a bad guy that won’t have power in the 2032 election. You need to build an affirmative vision for the future, starting now. Part of that needs to be reshaping a system that got this guy into power twice. Target systems, not people, to stop the pendulum swing.

The reaction is rational. Clearly RFK Jr is influencing things for the worst, but you have to fight the reflex to focus on the man and orient your sights on system that got him into the position he’s in. He won’t be in power after 2028, but if the system stays the same, who knows for 2032?

True cosmic horror isn’t that the universe is hostile. It’s that the universe is indifferent. This holds true at the human level. We imagine monsters with malevolent aggression toward us—but in reality, the greatest horror on earth is other humans indifferent to suffering.

I realize that my online me isn’t that fun. I’m thinking I’m a bit too serious. I’m only slightly more fun IRL because I’m more of a listener there. I’m my most fun self when hanging with my girls. Every other context is me just fluctuating between varying levels of seriousness or mental exhaustion.

It’s hilarious how often I overhear older folks saying people don’t want to work today. Please shut up. Your retirement investments go up with every corrupt move this administration makes. You are incentivized to distort reality so you can die at peace. Meaningful work just isn’t there right now.

There’s a lot to not like about Mullin, but I don’t think shitting on the guy for being a tradesmen is the right answer. More working class representation isn’t the end of the world. He is bad in particular for so many reasons. The UK just elected a plumber to Parliament and it was awesome news.

Saw this from a million miles away. Bullying just invalidates legitimacy. Punching down just creates viral resentment. “With great power comes great responsibility” and “Power doesn’t panic” are two of my favorite pop culture power quotes. Power means strength looks like calm restraint.
