I don't think there is a 5 hour gap to the next outbound service to Riversdale #metrotrains #Melbourne
Metro notify message of the 9.10am Flinders st to Riversdale terminating at Camberwell at 9.25am. The next service is shown as the 2.47pm. But the Alamein line runs a 15mins frequency shuttle service from Camberwell to Alamein stopping at Riversdale, so the waiting time is more likely 15mins than more than 5 hours

Just had an Alamein train annouced as delayed by "an hour" via the automated system at Camberwell. 30 seconds later it pulls into the platform, with the platform displays mixing between it and the late running Lilydale train 🤔 . A few people boarded the wrong train 😭

Another Federal Budget teaser drop in today’s Telegraph. $50m from the Feds to (most likely) investigate speeding up the Canberra-Sydney rail service. The current 3 x daily service takes about 4h 10m for the 329km journey. Increasing speed &/or frequency should be a prime target for any upgrades.

Reliable and frequent PT services on the other hand... That's what you need to get people out of their cars. That's where you spend the money you were thinking of blowing on free PT. Source: Göransson, J. and Andersson, H. (2023), doi.org/10.1186/s125...
Reliability [14, 23, 51] and frequency [23, 51] are attrib-
utes with a strong impact on PT demand. If the PT has
a low frequency or requires multiple transfers, the PT
system fails to attract new users, and a mode shift from
PT to private car can occur [6]. The Mohring effect,
coined by the economist Herbert Mohring, posits that
an increase in PT users leads to higher frequency, which
leads to more passengers. Conversely, a decrease in PT
users leads to a lower frequency, which leads to fewer
passengers [32]. Moreover, prices [51] and travel time
[40, 51] also affect the PT demand. The effect that price
changes have on demand is strongly influenced by other
PT attributes such as frequency, travel time and access.
Price changes can lead to an initial increase in demand,
but the duration of the effect is affected by the quality
attributes of PT [51].

For circa $70m the government could run more buses on weekends and at nights that don't have services now (source: IV's Fast Frequent Fair report) and help people save money long term by needing the car less, instead of the same money going on a month of free PT. #Melbourne #Victoria

Pretty much everyone who is driving instead of using public transport these days isn’t driving because of PT fares, but because the PT services don’t meet their needs. Gives you a clue where the priority is for government action.
