Something for @drdrehistorian.bsky.social ex-VR loco (X37) is bound for Perth to work on the Watco container shuttles. X37 was the first 2nd series X class, delivered on 9 April 1970 & served on mainline ops until 2015. It escaped conversion to an XR class or scrapping like other 2nd series Xs.

First trip on the Brisbane ‘Metro’ this evening from KG Square to 8 Mile Plains. Running to 5 minute headways in the PM peak, the station has platform screen doors. Top speeds of up to 90km/h on the busway but started to ‘wobble’ up & down at that speed. Otherwise pretty good.

This week in 1998: A drizzly winter Sunday in Melbourne at Spencer Street Station featuring an array of locomotives and trains from many operators: National Rail, West Coast Railway, V/Line, CountryLink & Rail Technical Services in a scene of a railway mostly lost to history.
NR92 arrives into Platform 2 with the Overland from Adelaide while N453 waits to depart with a broad gauge passenger train. 26 July 1998. In this view V/Line yard pilot Y156 & West Coast Railway locomotive B76 wait between jobs at the carriage sidings. In the background, Docklands stadium is under construction & taking shape. 26 July 1998. CountryLink XPT power car 2003 summers away in Platform 1 at the head of the daylight service to Sydney. 26 July 1998. After the arrival of the Overland in Platform 2 Rail Technical Services’ J104 prepares to shunt off the moto rail wagon & later haul the consist away for cleaning & servicing before forming the evening departure for Adelaide. 26 July 1998.

Australians are hungry for new history books – but historians are pressured not to publish locally
A new study shows that workplace priorities for Australian historians make it harder for their work to reach Australian readers – despite strong public interest.

Some scans from the back catalogue: My first visit to Adelaide in July 1998. Apart from Adelaide Railway Station (the last great Australian terminal station), the decay seen in stations like Port Adelaide were indicative of the decline of rail in that city until the revival began a decade later.
Adelaide Railway station in July 1998 with a Route 99 'B-Line' city loop bus at the front of the station. A tramline now runs down North Terrace with a tram stop roughly where the median strip is in this photo.A slightly over-exposed photo of a lone 3100 class diesel railcar on an Outer Harbor line service at Port Adelaide station. Generations of decay of the old South Australian Railways, and, post-1978 by the Metropolitan Transport Authority led to run-down and decrepit stations with a skeleton rail service.

100 years ago: on 10 June 1926, the Brisbane Limited left Sydney, bound for Wallangarra, where a narrow gauge train was to take the passengers on to Brisbane. Tragically, as the train passed Aberdeen at around 9:50 pm, a wooden viaduct collapsed under the train. Photo by my grandfather
A slightly warped nineteen-twenties photographic print of the wreckage of two railway carriages, as the rescue team begins to bring the ladders down. Sightseers are starting to join the clean up effort, under the watchful eye of a uniformed man; probably a railway official rather than a police officer; at left. Among the people standing in front of him, a woman in a conspicuously stylish combination of a fur overcoat and chequered cap: she was possibly one of the troupe of J C Williamson actors, on their way for a planned season of the play ‘Katja’, who had fortunately survived in one of the worst damaged carriages with only a few injuries

Got out for a photo run on the NSW Main South line last Friday on cloudy afternoon that turned into some beautiful golden hour light near sunset. Some of the fruits of my labours shown here with captions in Alt text:
Grinding over the top of the Cullerin Range on the NSW Main South is Qube export intermodal train 3112 from Wagga Wagga bound for Port Botany on the afternoon of Friday 22 May 2026. The first group of wagons contain a significant loading of reefer containers.Hot on the heels of 3112 was Aurizon intermodal train 3PS1 near the end of its transcontinental run from Perth to Sydney. The big power pair of ACD6064/ACB4405 are on the front as this well loaded train negotiates the curving, steam-age alignment of the Cullerin Range. The third northbound train that afternoon was Qube steel train 6MW7 from Melbourne bound for the Bluescope Steel plant at Port Kembla in the regional city of Wollongong with QL class locos 013/007/008 on the front as the cloudy afternoon cleared into golden late autumn light. The final train of the day was Pacific National 'mixed' steel and intermodal train 6NY3 from Newcastle (NSW) bound for the OneSteel plant at Whyalla SA. It is seen passing the site of the closed station at Fish River, with the large water tank the only reminder of where steam engines once took on water as they wound through the Cullerin Range.

After dumping Inland Rail, Australia has no plan to stop relying on diesel trucks for freight
Inland Rail was meant to take 200,000 trucks a year off our roads – but it’s now been cut in half. Why is rail freight shortchanged compared to roads and city rail?
