Microsoft’s datacentres and Optus owner among firms paying zero tax on billion-dollar Australian revenues
ATO database names big companies – including Microsoft subsidiary and Netflix - that pay little corporate tax, but noted there could be legitimate reasons Microsoft’s datacentre business and Optus parent Singtel are among a string of major corporations generating billions of dollars in revenue in Australia while paying zero income tax. Well-known multinationals like Netflix also only pay tax on a small fraction of their turnover, according to the Australian Tax Office (ATO). Continue reading...

Sure, it's short for "national conference". But CPAC Australia would be well aware it's also the name of another very prominent European conference for national conservatism.

Reuters got some of the IPO docs. Anthropic is a total dog of a company. Spent $12.6bn to make $4.6bn in revenue in 2025, $7.33bn of which was compute costs. Operating loss of $8bn. Losses getting worse year over year. Amazing stuff www.reuters.com/business/fin...
Summary
Companies
• Anthropic IPO could value the company at more than $2
trillion
• Anthropic lost $42 billion in 2025
• Al lab spent $7.33 billion on compute and infrastructure last year
• Operating loss widened to $8.06 billion in 2025 from $2.98 billion in 2024
• Execs, industry analysts have expressed concerns over harms of Al tech
Sept 28 (Reuters) - Anthropic is making a massive bet that Al will transform the global economy more profoundly than industrialization, electricity and the internet, according to its IPO prospectus seen by Reuters.
But the cost to get there will be staggering. Anthropic reported a net loss of $42 billion in 2025, and plans to spend $518 billion on cloud, computing and infrastructure obligations in coming year, according to the
prospectus.

Chose your fatality
dlvr.it
Chose your fatality
Personal safety often gets more attention than road safety. Both are important, but I would guess people misunderestimate their relative magnitude. I looked at some data from New South Wales, which to be clear is significantly safer on both dimensions than the US. In recent years, New South Wales has recorded the following statistics: Homicides: There were 85 murders in 2024, the highest annual count since 2014. In the 12 months leading up to March 2026, there were 87 recorded murder victims. (See: On Bondi Beach) Road Deaths: * Road Fatalities: In 2025, 355 people died on NSW roads, vs 327 in 2024. Speeding was associated with 134 deaths in 2025. * Pedestrians: 54 deaths, representing a 25.6% increase from the previous year. The majority of the 54 pedestrian deaths occurred on everyday suburban streets. Older road users (aged 70+) were particularly affected, accounting for 18 of these pedestrian fatalities. * Cyclists: 15 deaths (including three e-bike riders), which was a 200% increase over the 5 fatalities recorded in 2024. Cycling has notably increased with the advent of e-bikes in recent years. These increases occurred despite (because of?) broader national efforts to improve safety for vulnerable road users. The state government simultaneously blames drivers for driving too fast while opposing safe speed policies, and opposing the use of regulatory devices like unmarked speed cameras. --- FIN Read more

New tool directly links carbon emissions to amount of environmental and economic damage caused
Carbon Impacts Tracer can be used to estimate climate impact from emissions across eight different factors, including lost food production The biggest coal project before authorities in New South Wales, the HVO mine, will emit the equivalent of about 809m tonnes of climate-warming carbon dioxide if it wins approval. That number, for most people, will carry little meaning, as might the calculation that adding that amount of greenhouse gas to the atmosphere will cause an extra 0.00036C of global heating. But what if the public was instead told that that amount of carbon dioxide would expose almost half a million people to unprecedented heat, or kill nearly 15 million coral colonies on the Great Barrier Reef every time it bleaches? All those statistics come from a new tool that translates the emissions from burning fossil fuels into estimated real-world climate effects taken from peer-reviewed climate studies. “Small numbers in global warming can mean catastrophic impacts,” says prof Sarah Perkins-Kirkpatrick, a climate scientist at the Australian National University who is part of a team launching the Carbon Impacts Tracer.
