A thing I think about a lot when considering submissions, a revision, a designer’s work, etc. is CHOICES. - Does this person have a vision for what this project is trying to do? - Does that vision also serve the audience & its needs? (If not, we need to make different CHOICES from the outset.) +

A child dressed in a green dinosaur onesie and their black and white spotted dog bury a laughing dinosaur in the sand on the beach, while other dinosaurs dance in the background.A whimsical illustration of three friends; a bear, a bird, and a fox, sitting on a hilltop admiring the view while their rabbit and mouse friends run to catch up.A child joyfully jumps into a blue pool, where his friends floating in inner tubes and a dog swimming in the water watch with smiles on their faces.Rows of people and animals on camp chairs and picnic blankets are very amused by a large firework display in the park at night.

Let me just say as a school librarian… Right now the only task at hand is getting kids to read ANYTHING versus mindlessly scrolling. That battle is won or lost in grade school and no one book, genre, or style wins. What works for one kid, won’t work for another. We need every kind of book.

It’s OK to write [NAME TBD], [JARGON], or [SOLVE THIS LATER] if you get stuck, as long as you have a way to search for those spots down the line. You don’t have to stop your momentum until you crack the thing if you tend to get sidetracked or it’s making you miserable. This was a revelation.
