As an editor who works across picture books, MG, and YA and also occasionally acquires for the Scarlett Press imprint, it sometimes takes me a moment to switch gears from cute woodland animals in picture books to spicy dark romantasies about gargoyles and shadow daddies

I love when the first parts of a series starts off humorous and light-hearted and the later installments get more mature and emotionally heavy as the main character grows and comes of age. Series like Steven Universe, ATLA, Adventure Time, and most recently Spiderman Brand New Day had me bawling!

Help me make my YA list more genderqueer! I’d especially love to see high-concept, layered novels from trans voices (especially intersectional) but am open to folks across the entire genderqueer umbrella. Some of my faves: The Honeys, Hell Followed With Us, Felix Ever After, Cemetery Boys #MSWL 1/3

Still can’t stop thinking about Obsession! Disregarding my cortisol levels, I’d love to see more layered, thought-provoking horror that will get young people talking about real-life horrors & themes beyond the jump-scares and gore like bodily autonomy, morality, consent, etc. YA #mswl

It’s been a minute since I posted a picture book #MSWL! My taste for PB runs from the quirky, imaginative, & funny like Stalactite & Stalagmite by Drew Beckmeyer to the gorgeously lyrical, emotional, and joyful like Where They Gather by Teresa Rodrigues, illus by Jamiel Law. The common thread? 1/2

Hooray, The Queen of the Spirit Woods is an Indies Introduce selection! Congratulations @sharonchoe.bsky.social! This is a romantic fantasy based on Korean folklore & history personal to both my family and Sharon’s, and I can’t wait for you all to read it. Lots of wonderful indie love below: 1/4
The book cover for The Queen of the Spirit Woods by Sharon Choe showing on the front cover a young Korean woman dressed in traditional hanbok in the colors teal and maroon. Behind her is a glowing white sun. Partially obscuring her face is a three legged crow looking like it’s about to take flight. Within the girls torso is the image of trees and an enigmatic Hanok within the woods. The book shows a stenciled book pattern of purple and white lotuses.

Some thoughts on the word “didactic” from an editor who works on all kinds of kids books. Didactic is defined as “something intended to teach, instruct, or convey moral lessons.” There are many wonderful picture books out in the world that are meant to teach & affirm kids. Didactic =\= bad. 1/6

I’m behind in posting announcements, but in a time when queer books are under attack and AI is a source of dread, I have to talk about this one. This is a gorgeous story that is unapologetically queer and anti-AI, the balm I needed in these times. I can’t wait for the world to meet these survivors 🏳️‍🌈
Kristie Choi at Atheneum has acquired Where Time Ends, a YA debut by Megan Fletcher, pitched as The Last of Us meets The Last Bookstore on Earth, for fans of Neal Shusterman. This post-apocalyptic sapphic romance follows a teen, one of the oldest survivors in the world, holding out at a former summer camp where she and her friends seek to stop a mysterious countdown that decimates the population in descending order of age every New Year. Publication is set for summer 2028; Juliana McBride at Rebecca Friedman Literary Agency sold world rights.

Want to help keep ICE accountable but can’t go out and protest? Here’s an actionable thing you can do: Call senators urging them to support SB 5, the bill to increase law enforcement accountability by allowing folks to sue federal officers like ICE agents for violations of constitutional rights.

Religious freedom is important. All over the world, people experience real persecution and threats to their lives due to their religion. It takes a certain amount of privilege to think religious freedom means the freedom to be a hateful bigot. They don’t fear for their lives. They fear drag queens.
