The act of refusing a data centre is only the beginning of a longer, deeper and more meaningful fight in favour of development that communities have been screaming for, for a long time: safe energy sources, hospitals, schools.
n creating a movement around a broad set of engaging issues — fair democratic practice,
clean air and water, concerns over rising utility bills, and a righteous disdain for the tech
sector — Pennsylvanians are envisioning and making good alternative visions for the
state’s future. Rather than submitting to the idea that data centers are the only viable
future for Pennsylvania, we can seek future visions that prioritize the protection of natural
resources, democratic accountability, and investment in infrastructure that serves the
public. In a state long defined by what has been taken from it, these communities are
insisting on re-investing in what makes it thrive — community trust, cooperation, and a
righteous fight for a more just future.
