I'm glad that I let the native goldenrod stand in my new wildflower patch. Yes, I'm sneezing, but I know the goldenrod is not the culprit. It's pretty and the pollinators love it.

An observation my daughter made: If 'Strange New Worlds' is going to riff on 'Buffy and 'Angel' themes, the writers should tackle 'Hush.' That could make for a creditable sci-fi episode. #startrek #SNW #strangenewworlds

Trump couldn't demonstrate more tone-deafness now if he appeared in blackface. He'd have his arguments for it: Freedom of speech! Cancel culture! MAGA 'gets' it and approves! But ostentatious consumption is offensive in its own right.

I've started making my own fresh pasta. It's the kind of thing that you spend 2 hours on for an upgrade a lot of people probably won't notice if you don't tell them you did it, but it does taste better *and* it's the last, best excuse for adults to play with playdough.

I'm not a coffee drinker but I thought that professionals are expected to drink coffee, so, yes, I would carry a small cup of coffee into interviews. Maybe I lost some jobs because of it, but I also got jobs that allowed me to move ahead, regardless. Employers focused on your skills won't care.

The Kennedy Center, to those who care about it, is like the Enterprise to 'Star Trek' fans. There is a point past which insults will not be tolerated, and if you destroy it, we'll do everything in our power to bring it back in all of its analog glory to end the cult that damaged it.

Why are the only people who go up to Trump with tears in their eyes, big strong men? My take: He needs to be seen as the strongest, most dominant man in the world, so in his warped telling, pleas from those he sees as weak wouldn't matter. His fantasy is about the powerful groveling at his feet.

As a (mostly) a machine knitter now, I have a couple of scarves I can post for #ShowMeYourKnits - scarf edition.
This was done in double-bed jacquard on a KH-940. The tree pattern is based on the Frostfangs pattern available in Ravelry. Reverse of the double-bed jacquard pattern, with a birds-eye backing and a full needle rib center section. This one is Fair Isle, but I added 'wings' that became the reverse, to hide the floats. The reverse shows the solid 'wings' sewn shut with mattress stitch to create the back side.

Things I was frightened of as a child: 1. Losing my glasses. 2. Being without a handkerchief. 3. My older sister. (re 1 and 2: I was the quintessential nerd (also, left-handed). I later realized that my 'faults' were a gift because my family left me alone to read. That gave me a better life.)

From Heather Cox Richardson's letter today:
"Instead, Musk’s campaign urges people to go to “votesafe . org,” which collects their full name, home address, date of birth, email address, cell phone number, IP address and location (which identifies city and zip code), every link clicked, every page looked at, and voter registration status, among other information."

I recently took down the range hood to clean it. Later, I mentioned to my son that I spotted a sticker inside noting that the hood should be cleaned regularly -- but it was in a spot you wouldn't see unless you were cleaning it. His reply: "It's more of a thank-you note, then."

The squirrels and weather were knocking down some branches of the sunflowers, so I took a few of the nicer fallen blossoms and put them in a vase. The blossoms have held up well, but if you do the same, be prepared for a lot of falling pollination debris and formerly concealed insect life.

Suburban thoughts: Two houses on the back block (across the alley) had a habit of shining very bright lights into their back yards, all night long, sometimes. They lit up my yard as well. I grew up in the country and I like the nighttime to be dark. It's more right for the wildlife. (1/2)

RIP Wendell Berry, who died yesterday at 92. Poet, writer, agrarian, environmentalist. My favorite poem of his is "The Peace of Wild Things."
The Peace of Wild Things

Wendell Berry

When despair for the world grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting with their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

I hope we never again fall for the pitch that a candidate is so wealthy, they won't care about accruing more wealth and will work solely for the public good. Their entire focus has always been on increasing their own wealth. It's their fix, and they've gotta have it.

The lake name switch, even if embraced by Google, won't catch on because the mnemonic we all know is HOMES (Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, Superior). HAMES just doesn't cut it. SHAME is fitting, though.
