On average, the Dutch think that 20% of the people here is Muslim (it's 5%). They overestimate our income tax rate by 28%. They think the number of homicides is on the rise (it's falling). And that agriculture takes 19% of our land area (it's 60%). And they have strong opinions on all of the above.

I'm not sure I agree with @giorgio.gilest.ro's logic that this ends up with technofeudalism. Yes LLM-written papers are flooding journals, but that's because journals are and always were a bad tool for filtering for insight. Our response should be to try something different.

A separate issue is falsification of data. But to be honest, although LLMs make this easier, the current system has been rewarding data falsification with high impact publications for years. This is a problem we already had.

Journals should stop offering to store supplemental information. Everything that is shared with a paper should have it's own DOI, and live in a proper repository. As authors, link to files (e.g., Zenodo), but never add them as supplemental files.

Are there institutions yet that fully acknowledge that we need to take action on the peer review system? Leadership in my institution is still at: reviewed at high impact journal = good science, only preprint = untrustworthy Action comes from coordinating libraries in NL pushing for preprints.

I don't understand why researchers studying peer review don't more often become activists like researchers on climate change do. You want to change your institution if it claims that climate change is nothing to worry about. Why wouldn't you if your institution claims no worries about peer review?

retraction should not depend on evidence of fabrication/falsification. The key issue is whether the editors have confidence in the data. And for an article with strong potential for public harm it’s negligent of the journal to set such a high bar. #JAMA
