that kind of discovery requires a different world of in-depth reviews and critical essays in a sphere of independent magazines and bloggers &c. in the absence of a robust bookish internet of this kind, what you get is books that vanish into the dark and can at best hope to be "rediscovered" some day

Having grown up in Minnesota and only recently moved to Maine, I really enjoy Troy Jackson’s accent. It doesn’t sound like home, but it rhymes enough.

It’s dark. Sam asks for a tale. Strider tells of Tinúviel: ‘It is a fair tale, though it is sad, as are all the tales of Middle-earth. ‘The leaves were long, the grass was green, The hemlock-umbels tall and fair, And in the glade a light was seen Of stars in shadow shimmering…’

I believe this and also would’ve assumed the effect goes at least as strongly in the other direction. (For fiction, I basically never end up outside of genre shelves unless I’m actively looking for a particular author)

I kinda wonder about “group tea party” scenes in this context. I’m rereading Leckie’s Imperial Radch trilogy and there’s a lot of “a few people with different agendas revealed through conversation” which shows up in plenty of non-SFF and also gets used by someone like Cherryh to explore alien-ness…

I don’t think I’m ever going to get the appeal of pivoting to video for podcasts. I’ve been listening to podcasts for 20 years, and never once have I thought, my God, I need to SEE these people! I’m on a walk or doing the dishes, I don’t need video.

Sheep snuggles are a nice way to start the day.
A white sheep’s head, with the stub of horns visible, is resting on a jeans-clad leg. An arm is visible reaching to his back. He looks very handsome and very content. There’s a misty pasture and then wall of pine trees in the background.A white guy with a brown beard and mustache in a grey hoodie is leaning back to hug a brown sheep with white badger markings on this face. The sides of their heads are leaning together. There’s a misty barn in the background.

My memory of Ancillary Sword is that I read it once, enjoyed it, was surprised by what I got after Ancillary Justice, that there’s a fair amount of “comedy of manners” and that figuring out the “actual” gender of the Radch characters is more relevant than in Ancillary Justice
Cover of “Ancillary Sword” by Ann Leckie … the trade paperback with the red ship flying across a much bigger vessel in the background.

I left Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves like 8 minutes in. And I have a memory of early summer camp or school hiding in a little annex with a light on while a movie with some monster crossing a lake was playing. Both of those i was under 10. Also Arsenic & Old Lace on PBS I think.

"Broken Man cafe" sign on a big plate glass window, through which one can see cafe tables and chairs and backs of people's heads. In the distance, a sign indicates that this is Pier 22 on the Halifax waterfront

A great many white readers in 1967 were not ready to accept a brown-skinned hero. But they weren’t expecting one. I didn’t make an issue of it, and you have to be well into the book before you realize that Ged, like most of the characters, isn’t white.

Gandalf takes his stand in the ruined ring of the fortress of Amon Sûl. The nine Nazgûl move forward in the dark and begin their attack. Frodo and Strider, awake in their camp two days’ march to the west, see flashes of distant lightning in the direction of the Weather Hills.

Alright class, lets gather around and discuss parties as coalitions as the ability of members of legislature (MLs) to credibly challenge or defect from party leadership.

Increasingly feels like the LLM uses are “talk to computers if you never learned coding languages” and “either accelerate or try to ameliorate the various ways existing social & computer systems make life difficult” and they are a lot better at accelerating than ameliorating.

My third novel, HERO COME HOME, officially has a cover! Preorderable from the usual places us.macmillan.com/books/978125...
The cover of my third novel, HERO COME HOME. Four human figures centred, the main image being that of a bearded man looking back over his shoulder (that's Oro, the protagonist), with a circle of symbols behind him. We can see a swan and a key. In the foreground are three people: two women, one with a mysterious marking? scar? who knows!? on her cheek and the other carrying a sword, flanking an older, balding man holding up a pistol. The possibly-scarred woman looks ever so slightly amused, and that is certainly very like her. Everybody else is not happy to be here, or indeed, anywhere

Frodo hews at the arm, cutting the hand away, but shattering the sword. Then he remembers the rhyme: ‘Ho! Tom Bombadil, Tom Bombadillo! By water, wood and hill, by the reed and willow, By fire, sun and moon, harken now and hear us! Come, Tom Bombadil, for our need is near us!’

‘Old Tom Bombadil is a merry fellow, Bright blue his jacket is, and his boots are yellow. None has ever caught him yet, for Tom, he is the master: His songs are stronger songs and his feet are faster.’ Tom opens the barrow, sings away its spell, and awakens Frodo’s companions.

Again, we could've avoided so many problems if we enforced actually existing laws on the books. The case of the bailout was esp egregious as the US government owned majority stakes in multiple financial houses for a brief period and could've fired so many of the worst offenders. #EconSky

The thing about the Le Guin bot is I’m trying to thing of how many other series besides Earthsea have at least 3 or 4 quotes where as soon as I’ve read the first few words, I could finish the quote and tell you exactly where it’s from. Lord of the Rings, but beyond that a short list.

It turns out we could have implemented a ~$450 per ton carbon tax all this time without a populist backlash. It’s just that it would have had to come under the policy guidance of a right wing administration being consulted by the Heritage foundation.

For some reason I’m remembering a time when we were testifying against anti-trans bills in NH. And a dad brought his son, probably about 2nd grade (my youngest is in 2nd grade) up with him. And told a story about his kid being scared to go to the bathroom because trans boys might be in there.
