Sheep snuggles are a nice way to start the day.
A white sheep’s head, with the stub of horns visible, is resting on a jeans-clad leg. An arm is visible reaching to his back. He looks very handsome and very content. There’s a misty pasture and then wall of pine trees in the background.A white guy with a brown beard and mustache in a grey hoodie is leaning back to hug a brown sheep with white badger markings on this face. The sides of their heads are leaning together. There’s a misty barn in the background.

My memory of Ancillary Sword is that I read it once, enjoyed it, was surprised by what I got after Ancillary Justice, that there’s a fair amount of “comedy of manners” and that figuring out the “actual” gender of the Radch characters is more relevant than in Ancillary Justice
Cover of “Ancillary Sword” by Ann Leckie … the trade paperback with the red ship flying across a much bigger vessel in the background.

Morning coffee on the deck with the dog and the guineas is a pretty good way to start the day.
A full coffee mug with the Pendle Hill logo in the foreground partially obscures a lab relaxing on a wooden deck. The vague outlines of gray birds in the dog run and on the fence are visible further back, with a row of green trees behind them.

Everyone who’s not the encounter-er likes porcupine day, because the best way to get a sheep from our food-motivated flock is to feed them all. Gaia’s still looking a little hangdog even after grain.

Lovely flock on a lovely morning
A white sheep lies on the ground with a fence post and trees behind her. A group of about a dozen brown and white sheep are clustered under a big spreading pine tree. They’re lying down and contentedly chewing, with a few looking at the camera. There’s fenceposts, barn, and blue sky in the background behind.

Usually because of a goat, but not usually *this* goat.

Given recent GPS discourse there’s a joke to be made about these young guineas and forgetting to check whether the directions you’re following to a location accounted for bridges and tunnels
A group of young grey birds stands on top of a rickety farm structure. Underneath is a water feeder and a ramp to the (less rickety) barn. There’s a fallen wood fence panel closer to the photographer, a metal gate behind the birds, and the picture is taken through the frame of a wooden door.

Sometimes when you're a little sheep you need some help to reach the good food.
A sheep is standing on her hind legs reaching towards the oak leaves on a branch that a kid is pulling down. Her fore hooves are on the back of another grazing sheep. There are a few other sheep grazing in the area.A cluster of sheep is grazing and reaching towards a mesh of oak leaves that has been pulled close. A sheep is standing on his back legs to reach the leaves, and supporting his front legs on another sheep. That sheep is standing placidly, looking off in the distance, his head in between the camera and the actual "hooves on the back" placement.

We’re probably going to be saying goodbye to one of my favorite sheep tonight. We’ve known it was just time (she got a special ride to the farm in my car when we moved because we worried about her health then), but it’s still sad.

In case anyone wants to know what it’s like to parent my 14 year old …
Screenshot of a text - I’m getting some of marx’s writings to listen to, and since google doesnt want to show me an easy pdf download for them I’ve just been manually selecting and copying the entirety of whats on a specific page of a website called the “marxist internet archive”

But “a contribution to the critique of political economy” has ONE HUNDRED AND THIRTY SIX PAGES (im grabbing things based on the comments of a reddit post asking the same question I asked google which was “which works of marx do I read first”)

Im going to be sitting here selecting text on my phone for an hour at this rate

The goats have been walking through the fence so often they’ve worn their fuzzy fur off on a few spots, but confused old lady sheep goes to check the (literally) greener grasses on the far side & now the 12 year old wants to help me get it cleared. “Maybe.”
A kid in a grey hoodie has their back to the camera. In front of them is a scrawny and recently-shorn tall brown sheep. She’s in a brown patch near green grass. There’s an electric fence Corning the foreground - she’s on the wrong side. The sheep follows the teenager in a grey hoodie up a long path of green grass by the edge of the electric fence towards a White House. Some mostly-bare trees are visible on the left. The sheep, now followed by a smaller black goat, follows the teenager through a fenced dog run with green grass and near a wooden deck. Her flock can be seen in the distance behind a couple of fences. The sheep stands in a dim barn pen with plenty of hay on the ground and 3 or 4 other sheep plus the goat around her.

And the Thorin plays his harp and the music starts and Bilbo is carried away and Darkness creeps in twice and so we have *Magic* (not the wizard kind but the ”take you away from yourself” kind) for a couple pages.
An image of The Hobbit p13 - “when Thorin struck it the music began all at once, so sudden and sweet that Bilbo forgot everything else and was swept away into dark lands under strange moons, far over The Water and very far from his hobbit-hole under The Hill.
The dark came into the room from the little window that opened in the side of The Hill; the firelight flickered - it was April - and still they played on, while the shadow of Gandalf’s beard wagged against the wall.
The dark filled all the room … “ and the text continues to the dwarves singing.

Time to read the good shit. Good mornings, bad puns, talking foxes and so many flowing elf and dwarf locks.
The boxed set of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. You know the one, with a very stout Bilbo, Gimli and Legolas on “The Two Towers” real sexy just like you said, and Aragorn with a big winged crown that inspired my grade school Halloween costume.

I mean honestly reading @erikloomis.bsky.social obit of Dick Cheney and then hugging a sheep is a pretty good way to start the day.
A white guy in his early 40’s (me) wearing a green fleece and jeans sits on a rock in a sunny field of mostly-brown grass. He’s petting a sheep with white fleece and a black face while a couple other sheep backs are visible behind them. Green tree branches are interlaced above them, and a bright blue sky can be seen.

Tom Shippey’s “The Road to Middle Earth” reminds me of the Finnish Kalevela poem cycle, which in high school I argued was an influence on Tom Bombadil because of magic through singing, and has this on other possible sources.

Lovely fall on the farm.
A sunny day. Grey-white clouds in a bright blue sky. Below that, a blur of green trees behind the light brownish-green field. A flock of sheep is spread out, grazing. Closer up, in the shadow, taller grasses and brush grow.

From Eve Ewing’s “Original Sins” about antiblackness and anti-Native history and current implementation in US Schooling. Saving the 🔥 for the footnotes.
“To put it as plainly as I can: intellectual debates that are more concerned with the absolute supremacy of one historical form of shattering cruelty over another risk perpetuating a lie that we cannot work together against the ways those cruelties persist now, right now, in the immediate present. The assertion that the United States has been shaped first and foremost by anti-Blackness and chattel slavery or by anti-Indigeneity and settler colonialism, but never both, is only one heuristic for thinking about history and the future“

Ok, I’m sure some more books will pop up and need to be slipped in, but SFF is shelved, other than all the Tolkien stuff I need to sort out. Recognize anything?
Two bookshelves fully stacked. A few are facing out including Vajra's Saint of Bright Doors and Ken Liu's Grace of Kings. Generally alphabetical by author, but Robert Jordan and Steven Erikson's series are on bottom shelves on one side, and anthologies of various sorts are the bottom of the other.
