as i said long ago, my bandcamp is starting to reflect the eclecticism i cherish, with some arrhythmic noise, a handful of charming video game music, and of course 15+ hours of out-of-tune Satie. if you listen to and support my music then i'll make more of it, so be careful carriez.bandcamp.com

i like sounds. here you may find some small game scores, some noise music, and my ongoing attempt to record the complete works of Erik Satie on various pianos. enjoy.

i ihate to post about ‘politics’ but at this point everyone agrees that the only reason Joanna Newsom’s 5th album isn’t out yet is becuase Gavin’s pressuring the recrod label to stop his weird cousine from being in the news & making him look worse by contrast (he cannot name a single bird), right?

i have learned of either a terrible bsky misfeature or merely a new flavor of transient bug: if you have post notifications on for someone and they reply to you, you get only the post notification. there's no indication at all that the reply happened until you click into "new posts from". gahh!!!!

sometimes you futz around with editor config & shell utilities for a few hours, feel a sense of satisfaction, and then never use any of the stuff you set up ever again. today though. today i spent 10 minutes on it, found and made the things i'd been missing, and so much daily friction vanished.

i do not think it is ok for "full album" youtube playlists to include music videos for some tracks. those have sounds in them that are not from the album.

i think there is no clearer signal that a speaker has not actually thought about identity, oppression, and inclusion in a meaningful way than when they refer to an individual as "diverse", or, as i am just now with great horror learning is possible, "intersectional".

However, the game doesn’t have any way to view any credits in-game until you reach an ending. I don’t consider this to be an appropriate level of crediting for either the creators of the original games or the talented members of the Thekla team, and it doesn’t meet industry standards.

Earlier versions of the game did acknowledge the creators of the original games at the start of each section, and I consider it unacceptable that this was removed at Jon’s direction. Stephen Totilo noticed this change and wrote a nuanced article here: www.gamefile.news/p/a-complica...

scribble comic on being "born trans" cuz im always thinkin about it. #pepperbloomart
photo of a smeary ink comic in my sketchbook.
panel 1: "as a kid in the 2000s, my impression of trans people was mostly this." on TV, a woman states, "my soul is trapped in the wrong body."
panel 2: "in the mid 2010s it was more like this." a tumblr post reads, "my parents assigned me the wrong gender at birth."
panel 3: "throughout the eras of discourse there was one throughline." a figure waves a big pride flag and states, "nobody made me trans - i was born this way."
panel 4: "so if i definitely AM transgender, but if i definitely WASN'T at birth, where do i fit in?"
panel 5: me prancing around in a tutu. "i was not a transgender child. i loved girly stuff. ballet, barbies, the whole 9 yards."
panel 6: "actually i didn't even question my gender until all my friends were doing it." a friend asks, "we're all jumping off this bridge, you in?" i reply "oh hell yeah!"
panel 7: "but i did start to actively ID as trans after a few decades of the crushing expectations of womanhood." the word "womanhood" is massive, crushing me.
panel 8: "masculinity was my escape. maybe i didn't have a male 'soul,' but i WANTED one." i'm laying on my bed, gazing sadly at r/ftm.panel 9. "if we understand 'man' and 'woman' as social constructs, shifting among different places and time periods, then we must acknowledge transness is a construct as well." doodles of the same woman, dressed in clothes from around the world.
panel 10: "which is kinda scary! cuz if transness isn't inherent, then--" a strawman transphobe bursts in shouting "TRANS IS FAKE"
panel 11: transphobe grabs me by the shirt. "you admit it! gender is a social contagion! you're making the kids MORE TRANS!"
panel 12: "to which i can only respond" -- i shrug and smile -- "yeah! pretty cool right?"
panel 13: my fursona dressed as a girl and a boy, dancing with itself. "judith butlet famously described gender as performative. cis and trans alike, we act out gender to reinforce it."
panel 14: boy fursona vanishes. girl furzona is handed a paper with the trans symbol on it. "but you don't need to be handed the 'trans script' to try a new role."
panel 15: "after all--" my fursona wearing a beret in a folding chair. "you're in the director's chair!"
panel 16: me chillin'. "maybe if womanhood was defined differently, i'd still be a woman. but i CHOSE to transition. and i'm damn glad i did."

For those who want to follow along (& I have to say, at this point, I have no idea how many days this will take), I want to give a "deep dive" into how historians of medicine (#histmed) who work on the pre-modern/pre-print era actually go about researching a question. Today, I just discovered this:
The first part of an entry for a 13th-century English cardinal, Hugh of Evesham, who is said to have died in Rome in 1287 as the result of either "pestilence" or poisoning. Below is both the French text and an English translation.
"Hugues Atratus de Evesham. - Né à Evesham (Angleterre), il fréquenta les Universités de son pays natal, puis celles de France et d'Italie, se livrant surtout à l'étude des mathématiques et de la médecine. Il obtint des prébendes ecclésiastiques en Angleterre et fut appelé à Rome, en 1280, pour donner son avis sur des questions médicales. On a prétendu, à tort selon Marini, qu’il avait été le médecin du pape Martin IV, qui le fit cardinal."
"Hugh (the Black) of Evesham. Born at Evesham (England), he attended the universities of his home country, then those of France and Italy, focusing especially on the study of mathematics and medicine. He secured ecclesiastical prebends [appointments] in England and was called to Rome in 1280 to give his advice on medical matters. It is said (erroneously, according to Marini) that he was the (personal) physician to Pope Martin IV [r. 1281-1285], who made him a cardinal. The latter part of an entry from Wickersheimer's 1936 biographical dictionary of medieval French medical practitioners, for a 13th-century English cardinal, Hugh of Evesham, who is said to have died in Rome in 1287 as the result of either "pestilence" or poisoning. Below is both the French text and an English translation.

"Il mourut à Rome, en 1287, du poison suivant les uns, de la peste suivant d'autres[2] et fut enterré dans l'église Saint-Laurent « in Lucina ». Il composa divers ouvrages dont deux de médecine, Canones medicinales et Super opere febrium Isaac[3]; le seul qui ait été conservé est un Sermo in dominica Septuagesime [4]."

He died in Rome, in 1287, from poisoning according to some, from "pestilence" according to others, and was interred in the church of Saint Laurence in Lucina. He composed various works of which two were on medicine: "Medical Canons" and "On Isaac [Israeli's] Work on Fevers." His only work that survives is a sermon on Septuagint Sunday [the ninth Sunday before Easter].

People act sometimes like there is this thing called "oppression" that you can fill in with different nouns and adjectives like mad libs instead of complex social systems mediated by history and society and the individual.

my curse is being much more interested in ways that it might be possible to communicate something than in communicating any particular thing. or maybe i'm simply averse to putting in the work to clarify what i want to say? even this thought started out simple and got annoying as i typed it..

"Libidinal epistemicide" comes to mind, as the same obsession that drives many academics to desire the transfeminine subject are the same ones who overwrite her agency and right to participate in the project of knowledge-building. Disgust/desire are two sides of same desubjectification.

One of the things I know about writing is this: spend it all, shoot it, play it, lose it, all, right away, every time. Do not hoard what seems good for a later place in the book or for another book; give it, give it all, give it now. The impulse to save something good for a better place later is the signal to spend it now. Something more will arise for later, something better. These things fill from behind, from beneath, like well water. Similarly, the impulse to keep to yourself what you have learned is not only shameful, it is destructive. Anything you do not give freely and abundantly becomes lost to you. You open your safe and find ashes.
