typical jane text
That movie is a hoot and a holler though it is 100% worth pirating and/or watching for free through the library on Kanopy if you haven’t seen it

if you read enough biographies of jazzmen they’ll start dropping incredible names of guys they toured with
My biggest back then was a guy named Rastus Crump who was with Thomas's quintet. He was a small little manBy the first week in November, we came back into New York and went into the Lafeyette Theatre for the second time that year. The stage show that we were a part of was called Music and Laughter, and the headline singer was Alice Harris, who was very well known in vaudeville, and the other star was Garbage Rogers, a top comedian from Chicago. He was a very funny guy. We liked one of his skits so much that we stole it and tried to use it later on.
Old Garbage used to come onstage in a full-dress outfit, top hat, cane, gloves, and everything.

I find NOROI very comforting to watch and think about, and I’ve never quite figured out why. But here is one reason for sure: characters in that movie make bad decisions constantly, but making good decisions instead would not save them.

father. Sidney Hook suggests that Dewey's children were oddly unappreciative of their father's intellectual reputation and that with the exception of Evelyn, who wrote Schools of Tomorrow with him, oddly uninterested in what he most cared for. A friendlier rendering might be that Dewey was a wonderfully affectionate parent, if not always fully present in either body or mind, and the children attended to that and not to his remote, adult concerns. All the same, they, too, could be lost from sight. Entertaining tales were told of Dewey's forgetfulness about the children. On one occasion Dewey was deep in conver- sation with a colleague when a small boy accosted him and asked for money. Dewey handed over a nickel and complained mildly, " The trouble with boys in this city is that they're always asking you for money.' The friend looked astonished, and said, 'Well, Professor Dewey, isn't that your son?' John looked and said, 'Why, yes, I guess it is.'

tends to confirm this. After the war he gave up the cabin in the Adirondacks and bought a farm on Long Island. Many of his neighbors never realized that he was a distinguished philosopher; they took him to be what he seemed, an elderly neighbor who sold them eggs and peaches from his farm. "My good- ness, it's the egg-man," a neighbor is said to have exclaimed in some alarm when the distinguished philosopher she had invited to her party showed up at the door. Dewey may well have thought there was a deep value involved not

I was complaining to my friend E—— that I like Herrera a lot but his novels all have titles like SIGNS PRECEDING END OF THE WORLD or THE TRANSMIGRATION OF BODIES or SEASON OF THE SWAMP and E—— said, “Are you complaining that his titles are awesome?” That was enough to change my mind about it.

it’s genuinely fascinating how establishment democratic politics in big cities has become so ossified and incompetent that they’ve created a huge lane for the left to embrace good government reforms and build a broad coalition of socialists and technocrats

It was so huge when I replayed MURDER DOG IV: THE TRIAL OF THE MURDER DOG earlier this year and found a joke about THE MAN WITHOUT QUALITIES that I had totally missed when I last played it, having not read the novel. MURDER DOG IV is so funny and good. But it is also pure Doryslop. I know that.

trying to think about the current prompt du jour. I’m not a video person but ofc I “live in society” and I try to think both seriously and openly about aesthetic questions. So what are nine foundational pieces to how I think about the aesthetics of videogames, construed as both genre and medium?

Video games are not really in my life but this has not always been the case. Couple years ago I was at a Laurie Anderson show downtown and I ran into somebody who I last saw when I was five or six years old. “You were very serious about Crash Bandicoot,” she said. I suppose I was.
