What I'm listening to today: "Riverrun Humbling Allegory", Lauren Bousfield Manic wound of d&b and distorted synths. I think of Lauren Bousfield as sort of the evolutionary link between millennial Soundcloud vaporwave and zoomer YouTube breakcore laurenbousfieldanyev3r.bandcamp.com/track/riverr...

there's not much of a critical apparatus for the discussion of experimental electronic music these days, so you'll just have to take it from me that this piece fucking rules and is worth exactly 14 minutes of your focused attention

i ihate to post about ‘politics’ but at this point everyone agrees that the only reason Joanna Newsom’s 5th album isn’t out yet is becuase Gavin’s pressuring the recrod label to stop his weird cousine from being in the news & making him look worse by contrast (he cannot name a single bird), right?

Satie sample in "Near or Far" on the new Carly Rae Jepsen, and she actually seems to understand that the special Satie thing is less "soft gentle unintrusive" than "non-functional tonal harmony", which is pretty cool! good track. some fun chord progressions elsewhere on the album too. thanks Canada

update: memorizing remained fun & soothing. in absence of any other sort of performance chance, i decided to record the piece yesterday to mark 3 weeks since i started learning it. (spent a lot more time failing to fix a color grading problem than on the recording itself, c'est la vie.) it was fun!

what the "bleyzes" could this next project be…
mysterious screenshot of my computer desktop with visible a window of typeset sheet music and a window of hand-written sheet music. the words "hydro" and "dredging the lake" and "then i", etc. but it's not my handwriting? by the way my desktop background is currently Irene Rice Pereira - Evaporating Night (1951). carrie lore for true fans: each day my desktop background cycles to a new painting from a big folder of abstract paintings. also the file of my fave ilya repin painting is visible in the corner. also idk if "bleyzes" has some kind of other meaning, but here it's just meant as a reference to Carla Bley. thanks for reading

mike flanagan’s upcoming “carrie” miniseries is actually about me. mike flanagan found out that he shared a name with mike leigh and therefore decided to start making slow-paced heartfelt biopics of people whose lives aren’t particularly dramatic, starting with me. i’m honored.

saw a public piano in a park, and on a whim i decided to return in the middle of the night and record some Satie, so after i do some editing and stuff, Satie Complete Piano Works Volume 13 will probably arrive later this month! it’s going to be a good one i think
the provisional album art for Satie 13, which is a photo of me at said park piano at like 1 AM, with a streetlight in the background (and a banner that says "Newton" revealing that this instalment was made in the great town of Newton from which presumably Isaac Newton hails). (actually it's a screenshot of the Mac OS X default image editing software while i work on that image. that's the same social-media indulgence that i did last year in my post about installmment 12, because it was so universally well-received last time.)

i played the computer game "868-BACK" over the weekend and somehow got a score that achieved 48th on the "leaderboard", which is the first and probably only time i'll ever appear on a leaderboard of any kind!
The "868-BACK" leaderboard, with me ("hummingbird"), at position 48, with a score of 1436. According to Wikipedia, 1436 is the year Gutenberg began work on the printing press, though we know little of how his work progressed until 1450 when the press was in operation. It's also the death year of Jacqueline, Countess of Hainaut, a central figure in Holland's Hook and Cod Wars.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=lBYq... is the most charming classical music video ever, and that’s mainly because of Patricia Petibon and Joseph Haydn, but Daniel Harding also bears some credit (especially if he refined the string articulations), so i get why LA hired him as soon as they saw it

saw the kabuki play 裏表先代萩 and Nikki Danjo is such a funny villain… modern storytellers take note, what people want to see is a guy get hyped up for 3 hours as a scary evil wizard, then when he finally appears, he turns into a rat & back for no reason and tries to kill a defenseless old man and fails

i've got a good feeling about the upcoming TMBG album.. i like the picture, i like the big track count, the first single has both guys singing (and it's a satisfyingly bizarre concept and has good Linnell chord changes).. i'll probably like it regardless but maybe it'll be a actually rly good album!
