Today is the day to commiserate with Charles Darwin, on the 161st anniversary of his confessing to Charles Lyell that he felt "...very poorly today & very stupid & I hate everyone & everything." Here's more of the back story on Darwin writing about this not-so-good day. www.npr.org/sections/kru...

Geniuses have it easy, right? They wake up and out pops the brilliance. Well, not really. And not if that genius is Charles Darwin, who's got lots to do and absolutely no desire to do it. Those days (...

I've discovered SO MANY books and authors on this app, the most recent being: Light Eaters by @zoeschlanger.bsky.social and Kill All Wizards by @jedediahberry.bsky.social Both of which are outstanding, I might add
The Light Eaters cover is matte black with a fluorescent colored flower and tendrils in pinks, purples and greens and yellows... "How the Unseen World of Plant Intelligence Offers a New Understanding of Life on Earth"Kill All Wizards cover is bright green featuring a cartoon barbarian with shaggy hair and an eyepatch , wearing a mauve suit, drinking tea and leaning on an enormous sword

THE SCARLET BALL, my dark fantasy novel due out on OCT 6, is set in an 1890 that never existed. During the 1890s, dip pens were still king, but the modern fountain pen was beginning to appear. This, I suspect, is a Beekman fountain pen from the late 1890s.
Hardback book, The Scarlet Ball, resting on a wooden table with a black fountain pen laid across it diagonally.

The Scarlet Ball features an Asian woman in a red dress holding a white skin mask as shadowy hands reach for her. The text on it reads:

THE SCARLET BALL
USA TODAY BESTSELLING AUTHOR
NGHI VO

The pen is black, with no clip or cap bands.

Shouldn't it be Batman Night? Anyway, happy Batman Day.
A city street at the pinkest part of dusk. A dude in the fanciest coat you've ever seen is hanging out with his boyfriend in leather pants. The sweet coat dude turns to see Batman strolling down the street, cape flapping fabulously in the breeze. The coat dude flirts, "Hiya, Batman. Nice night for a stroll." Batman ain't DTF, though, so he simply walks past, while greeting them with a, "Gentlemen."

Fight scene snippet, snip-snip-snip
Instantly the monstrous hands latched onto his feet, his ankles, the hem of his cloak. They slowed him down but could not stop him—he barreled forward, catching those in his path with a series of sweeping hacks that sent severed fingers flying like so many scattered ninepins.
