there are a lot of calypso singers who sing popular calypsos, but to be a calypsonian you have to write your material. it's a beautiful word I agree

Tangent: I love the term “Calypsonians” So much better than “calypso-ers” or “calypsos”, very regal sounding, implies that they are inhabitants of a place called Calypso which would be quite magical indeed

Mind blown -- Melody Maker in the UK reviewed "The Crusher" by Minnesota's the Novas:
THE NOVAS: The Crusher / Take 7 Menden IMO 0940
All about hammerlocks and other wrestling crushing. with a hoarse-voiced Mick McManus-type taking the lead, Droning backing. Obviously amusing; but with a tremendously compulsive best and feel. Could prove a biggie.

Fun day in Riverwest today—huge multi-street rummage sale plus a quirky not-so-little Ren Faire only a block away. My neighborhood keeps finding new ways to fly their freak flag high while squeezing in a few more outdoor events while we can.
Down the street view from a multi-block rummage sale with many different vendorsView of Argren Faire, a multi-block, Renaissance fair. There’s a park with a variety of activities—LARP combat, blacksmiths, dancing, vendors, etc along with some cosplayers.Feats of strength competition here with a man dressed in black holding a sword at arms length for as long as he can hold it up.A father and daughter engaging in LARP combat (maybe not the right term?) with two others a little more suited up behind them doing the same

celebrate the King’s birthday by posting your favorite Jack Kirby image No way I can post just one! So here’s four from my camera roll which show Jack’s range—humor, pathos, action, and weird shit #jackkirby
The Thing opens a package and out pops a spring-loaded boxing glove that hits him with a loud “WHAP!”Ben brushes back a tear while he holds Franklin Benjamin Richards.

“NOBODY... EVER NAMED NOTHIN...
AFTER ME BEFORE!”

“NOW... ALL OF A SUDDEN... I FEEL LIKE PART OF...A FAMILY...'STEAD OF A FREAK SHOW!”

Baby Franklin has his arms around Ben.Huge action panel with the original X-men are fighting the early Avengers—Iron Man considers attacking Iceman who has Giant Man encircled with ice. Marvel Girl is using her telekinesis to catch the Beast who warns her about the Wasp swooping in. Angel squares off again Thor, Cap lifts up Cyclops who is shoot is eye beams hitting some rocks.Caption: “STRONG BEAMS OF ELECTRICAL FORCE STAB INTO THE CORE OF NERVES..”

I think this is Ikaris of the Eternals with two electrodes embedded just above his eyes. His face looks skull-like and there is a very large sound effect in scary letters “EEAAAAA!”

Without downloading any new pics, where are you mentally?
Patrick McGoohan in THE PRISONER in one of the medical corridors shown in the series, lit up with a deep red light and there are straps spaced apart along the corridor. Number Six, bathed in a very contrasting green/bluish light, is grabbing two of the straps with a stunned, dazed, and confused look on his face

Had no idea Alex Cox (REPO MAN, SID & NANCY, etc.) wrote a book on THE PRISONER! Happy to have tracked down a used copy, it’s jumping the reading queue since I recently finished a rewatch of the series.
Cover of I AM NOT A NUMBER- Decoding THE PRISONER by Alex Cox. The cover features a black and white photo of Patrick McGoohan with a large red “6” superimposed over his face. The book title has the word “NOT” faded somewhat so it can alternately read “I AM A NUMBER”

Am I to understand that the co-writer of ‘60s pop classic “Red Rubber Ball” actually used a rubber ball to get in the zone for songwriting? www.theguardian.com/music/2026/a...
One of the images that always comes to me is Paul in a room with a rubber ball - bouncing it, bouncing it, bouncing it - to get into Zen-like state where lyrics start to come," Kahn said. "He's already thinking about songwriting. The lyrics are there. He just needs silence all the other shit that's in one's mind."

Sorta knew about this but there was more or less (with exceptions) a two year gap in recorded music in the US from 1942-1944 due to a musicians union strike against the record companies over royalties. This Wikipedia entry touches on it but the mind boggles at what must have been lost.
