I’m pretty sure I have that Moorcock book. It’s probably in a tier of old paperback books shelved behind other ones in a deep shelf. A not-great shelving strategy that I resorted to ages ago due to lack of shelves. But it yields surprises when I move books I the front layer.

This is what talk radio sounded like before Howard Stern & Rush Limbaugh turned it into a circus. Jean Shepherd was an eloquent & melancholy barroom raconteur who wore the pose of an Everyman, without dumbing anything down or appealing to his listeners’ worst instincts. youtube.com/watch?v=jK3z...

Nebel’s second wife was a WWII pin-up model named Candy Jones. A charming and mercurial woman, Jones became Nebel’s cohost during the last six years of his career. Jones believed that she was a victim of the CIA’s MK-ULTRA mind-control program. MAGA conspiracy theory is mostly regurgitated Jones.

It has often been said that Art Bell’s insanely popular Coast to Coast AM radio show was a mash-up of John Nebel and Jean Shepherd, except that Bell was a believer where Nebel was a gentle skeptic.

Art Bell was a student of radio. Much of Coast to Coast AM repackaged the everyman monologues of Jean Shepherd and the open-minded conspiracy chatter of John Nebel & Candy Jones for the 1990s anti-government Libertarian X-Files crowd. Joe Rogan dumbed down that act & added a touch of Howard Stern.
