A recurrent theme in this excellent story about China’s progress is that people there regard Trump as essential to their success, including his ability to drive scientific talent from the US www.newyorker.com/magazine/202...
In Beijing, a think tank at Renmin University recently published an assessment titled
"Thank Trump," which wryly hailed his efforts to hasten the "twilight of an empire," by undermining America's alliances, civil service, scientific institutions, and democratic credibility. In the past two years, the international approval rating of the U.S. has dropped nearly forty points, according to a worldwide survey by the Alliance of Democracies; in multiple polls, China now rates higher than the U.S.

🚨🚨🚨 DOJ sent a grand jury subpoena from the Northern District of Texas to NYU Langone for all patient records of trans youth. DOJ is engaged in forum and judge shopping in Texas in a blatantly unlawful bid to shut down gender affirming care in blue states. nyulangone.org/public-notic...

A screenshot of a webpage notice from NYU Langone Health titled "Information for NYU Langone Health Patients." The full text of the notice reads:
"On May 7, 2026, NYU Langone Hospitals (“NYULH”) was one of several institutions that received a grand jury subpoena from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Northern District of Texas. Among other requests, the subpoena directs NYULH to provide information pertaining to patients under the age of 18 who received gender affirming care at NYULH between 2020-2026, as well as the names of NYULH providers and others who were involved in offering such care at NYULH in that timeframe.
Pursuant to the New York State Shield Law, any entity in New York State that receives a request for information regarding legally protected health activity, such as the provision of reproductive health care or gender-affirming care, must make a reasonable attempt to notify the individuals to whom that request pertains at least 30 days before complying with or providing information in response to the request. More information about the Shield Law is available here.
We understand that these developments may be concerning to our patients, providers, and others. Please know that NYU Langone takes the privacy of your protected health information very seriously and we are evaluating our response to the subpoena. We will post updates at this website.

John Lewis had John Roberts' number from the jump: takebackthecourt.substack.com/p/john-lewis...
Take Back the Court REP. JOHN LEWIS: In 1965, Jurist Roberts was only 10-years-old. He may be a brilliant lawyer, but I wonder whether he can really understand the depth of what it took to get the Voting Rights Act passed. The right to vote is precious, almost
sacred. It is the most powerful non-violent tool we have in a democratic society. As many of you know, I gave a little blood on the Edmund Pettus Bridge, but some
of my friends and colleagues gave all they had, their very lives for the right to vote. I feel that if Judge Roberts is confirmed to be the Chief Justice of the United States, the Supreme Court would no longer hear the people's cries for justice. I feel that the leadership of the Court will promote politics over the protection of individual rights and liberties. If the Federal Courts had abandoned us in the civil rights movement in the name of judicial restraint, we might still be struggling with the
burden of legal segregation in America today. Jurist Roberts's memos reveal him to be hostile towards civil rights, affirmative action and the Voting Rights Act. He has even said that Voting Rights Act
violations, and I quote, "should not be made too easy to prove.'

Black voter participation soared right after the VRA passed in 1965. But not until 1992, after Congress strengthened the VRA to require majority-minority districts, did we start getting closer to proportional Black representation in Congress. Because Black votes finally counted more in the South.
Black representation in the US House, Confederacy vs. rest of the US: chart showing a brief surge during Reconstruction, then almost none during Jim Crow, then a big surge after the VRA (mostly in the rest of the US, not the Confederacy), then a big surge all over the US, especially the Confederacy. Only in the last 10 years has Black representation in the House grown to about the same proportion as the US black population.
