Much has been written about ageism and Madonna with this idea of popular culture as static and merely repopulating with new, younger talent. But Madonna's longevity exposes the truth — culture can only ever be temporal, ephemeral, a moment. The machinery changes, and eventually the kids are gone.

There's something to be said for Madonna and MTV being pretty much mirror images of each other. Both redefined popular culture in the eighties; both pushed the envelope in the nineties and early 00s; and now both exist somewhat quaintly on the periphery of a much noisier landscape.

When I was in grade four, I had a teacher keep me after class to “correct” my walk. Another teacher criticized how I sat with my legs crossed. Throughout my childhood, fathers of multiple male friends took me on walks to throw a ball around. “You need a stronger male influence.”
