I have made language models with public domain data. Sure, not giga-scale models, but models nonetheless. I never needed to steal other people's work. I think the way forward is teaching AI about the world directly, not about a meta-world of text-about-the-world. Nobody needs to steal to make AI.

I can’t emphasize this enough — “AI” wasn’t born corrupt and toxic. For ~75 years, it was mathematicians and scientists doing interesting, thoughtful work and trying to solve problems, making only the usual human mistakes. What “AI” did to machine learning is as tragic as what it did to artists.
