Hawaii faced two tropical threats within a week in mid-August as El Niño warmed ocean waters around the islands. As a result, the storms had more available heat and moisture to draw from, which contributed to their strengthening.

A glacier collapse on the Nepal-China border has killed hundreds and left thousands missing,after a section of ice nearly 2,000 feet wide broke away from a Himalayan mountain.The resulting flood moved downhill at speeds of up to 120 miles per hour,damaging villages, bridges and other infrastructure.
