Jessie shows these “refuges” are exactly where climate warming will disrupt seed production the most. They may not be such great climate refuges after all. doi.org/10.1111/ele....

If you take the time to read the whole Gates memo (which I did), the bulk of the content was mostly solid and encouraging. Really! It was the FRAME that was off--very off, from the first line. And when your framing is off, then how you make decisions and set priorities is off. THAT'S the problem.
My quote from an Axios interview, stating that: People often think of climate change as a separate bucket at the end of a long row of other buckets of problems we're trying to fix that are wrong in the world," Hayhoe told Axios.
This includes poverty, disease and access to clean water.
"Climate change is not a separate bucket," Hayhoe said. "The reason we care about climate change is that it's the hole in every bucket."

‪Great opportunity: full @ukri.org funded PhD Studentship with 4 years fees, stipend (£19237 pa) and full Research Training Support Grant, working with Prof Ian Bull, Director of the National Environmental Isotope Facility and my @ercrefresh.bsky.social team! Starts 10/2025 shorturl.at/AJREj 🧪
An algal bloom on a nutrient enriched lake encroaches into the Nymphaea alba and Chara hispida beds, causing plant dieback. Your work will develop a novel, targeted analytical method to allow us to rapidly screen samples to determine the molecular composition of the dissolved organic nutrients in these and other waters. These provide a critically important but overlooked nutrient resource driving ecosystem damage and biodiversity decline in waterbodies. We currently lack a unified technique that can rapidly screen samples in a targeted manner. You'll likely be highly motivated, enjoy both field and laboratory work, and be a good analytical chemist with attention to detail who is keen to make your mark through novel method development. Give Ian a ring or send him an e.mail (ian.d.bull@bristol.ac.uk), or contact me here or via my e.mail penny.johnes@bristol.ac.uk. We have a large team on the ERC REFRESH programme that you will be joining, along with two other PhD students due to start at the same time. Great team and learning opportunities.

Scientists define the ingredients for finding natural clean hydrogen
Researchers at the University of Oxford, Durham University and the University of Toronto have detailed the geological ingredients required to find clean sources of natural hydrogen beneath our feet. The work details the requirements for natural hydrogen, produced by the Earth itself over geological time, to accumulate in the crust, and identifies that the geological environments with those ingredients are widespread globally.

Thank you @michaelemann.bsky.social and @climatebook.bsky.social for this well written critique of ARIA's solar geoengineering research plans which are extremely risky and a huge distraction:
There is extreme danger in launching such field trials into an environment with neither national nor international governance in place. The only governance would be that imposed by Aria directors, who are accountable to basically nobody. Worse, Aria can fund projects outside the UK, which invites shopping for sites with poor environmental regulations and limited opportunities for public protest. Provision of government funding for crossing the Rubicon to outdoor experimentation will inevitably legitimise such programmes, opening the floodgates for yet more money to pour into developing geoengineering technology worldwide. And once the engineers involved realise, as they inevitably will, that “small scale” experiments do not answer any of the truly critical questions, there will be demand for ever-larger trials, putting us on a slippery slope to full-scale deployment.
