This is an amazing contribution by @juliecrabot.bsky.social !🙌🏽 It advances our knowledge on freshwater salinization spatial distribution, essential to identify major EU hotspots! It has been an honour to have had the chance to work with this great #JRC team @scienceinnovation.ec.europa.eu 📢

Congrats to Victor di Cavalcanti for this new publication in Journal of Applied Ecology! 💧 Non-perennial rivers are more vulnerable to human impacts. ✅Functional redundancy was the most promising monitoring indicator. besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/... @tdatry.bsky.social #IRES

When natural disturbances and anthropogenic stressors interact, non‐perennial reaches become particularly vulnerable to global change: Insights from France
Our results show that functional redundancy provides a consistent indicator of anthropogenic impact across both perennial and non-perennial rivers. We suggest that incorporating this metric into biom...

💧Around half of Europe’s river network is affected by freshwater salinisation. A new study published in @natcomms.nature.com and involving #JRC researchers analysed data from 35 countries, revealing widespread salinisation and previously underreported hotspots. link.europa.eu/3YfgdG #SciComm

"Flash droughts" are emerging as a new threat under warming. These rapidly occurring dry periods emerge from intense heat and low humidity ➡️ rapidly suck moisture out of the landscape, creating a “hyper-flammable” state ➡️ fire spreads faster, lasts longer and grows larger than other wildfires.

Flash droughts pull ‘alarming’ amounts of moisture from the landscape and intensify wildfires: new research
We have to stop thinking of droughts simply as a static state of low moisture. Rapid drought changes can send fire risk soaring.

When I started my PhD, I thought we were the only crazy ecologists out there. Why? Because we transplanted 1m² alpine communities downslope to study climate change effects. Imagine thousands of plants and tons of soil flying over the French Alps 😅

The lack of evidence for declining local diversity through time must be because everything is homogenizing, leading to larger-scale losses. Right?! Nope, says our analysis of 500+ meta-communities through time just published in Science Advances 🧪🌎🐟🌳🦋 🐦🦌 www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

Synthesis reveals approximately balanced biotic differentiation and homogenization
Homogenization is most common at large temporal and spatial scales but is balanced by differentiation at smaller scales.
