Fig 1 from the paper is a multi-panel plot showing the location of our study sites on the Delmarva peninsula of Maryland and within a landscape with many headwater headwater wetland complexes. The graph in the bottom right corner shows the range of wetland areas (<500, >5000 m2) and mean water levels (0.1-0.8m) at our core study sites.Three panel plot showing (a) lower CO2 concentrations in wetland surface water compared to shallow groundwater adjacent to each study wetland, (b) higher CH4 concentrations in wetland surface water compared to shallow groundwater, and (c) positive relationships between CO2 and CH4 for surface water (R2 = 0.2) and shallow groundwater (R2 = 0.4).Six panel plot showing (a) no relationship between wetland area and CO2, (b) a positive relationship between wetland perimeter:area and CO2, (c) a slightly positive relationship between height above drainage network [HAND] and CO2, (d) a negative relationship between wetland area and CH4, (e) a positive relationship between wetland perimeter:area and CH4, and (f) a positive relationship between height above drainage network [HAND] and CH4
