I wish there were a way to indicate when an "oh my god" is meant to be read like it sounds in "Return of the Mack."

Two men with buildings behind them. One looks up as the other is lifted into the air.Two men talking in a room. Wood floors, windows, a couch.Panel one has three musicians in a dark room talking. Panel two the lights go up revealing five more musicians and they all being playing the song.

What a great series. Thanks for all your insights, and I hope the expanded book version happens.

It’s really hard to think of plausible contenders outside of fairly obvious ones like Brainiac. Mongul wouldn’t be around, as a copy of Thanos who was kind of a copy of Darkseid and Metron in the first place. Maybe Despero? He’s a physical and mental threat, and checks a lot of Darkseid boxes.

And of course Didio and Johns had been keen to bring Barry back for some time regardless of what Morrison planned to do, so this was a good opportunity to finally pull that off.

But the reboot got pushed back a couple years, and supposedly the general sense was “well, all the other Crisis stuff was undone, we’ll keep Barry too.”

I always thought Barry Allen’s return was an editorial mandate, but allegedly there was a little more to it: Final Crisis was meant to actually close the book on the DCU for a reboot (the eventual New 52), and Morrison wanted to bring the Crises full circle by returning Barry in that final epic.

Based on where I tended to spend my comics blogosphering time back then, I want to say that was something either @iamdavidbrothers.com , @gavin4l.bsky.social or @uzionmain.bsky.social made, or possibly just some clever dork on SomethingAwful’s BSS subforum.

If it’s the one I’m thinking of, it’s punctuated by three panels of Batman firing the gun at Darkseid and the PING of the ape guy solving the Rubik’s Cube in 17 moves before AND TAKE YOUR MONEY, yes?

Yeah I made a hard break at Prime because AoA was to my mind so much more interesting than the then-dull standard Marvel line. It basically ended my first era of collecting comics, in fact, until sometime around Heroes Return. Which wasn’t actually much time away, but it felt like it as a teenager.

The irony of Pietro having a relatively pleasant and well-adjusted personality (and a positive relationship with his father) in that crapsack reality was kind of novel, as was his role as basically the Cyclops of Magneto’s team; but yeah it didn’t make him more interesting than his counterpart.

Was Major Bummer even part of the DCU? I don’t recall any overt crossover stuff, all the superheroes were original to that book from what I remember, but I also only read a handful of disconnected issues and the last arc.

He doesn’t do much more than carry a katana in terms of faux-martial artistry, but being willing to fight Godzilla with it earns some bonus points for Captain Douglas Gordon from Final Wars. Besides, every fighting game needs a big beefy grappler, and Don Frye already looks like Mike Haggar.

Wish any of Nate and Andy’s attempts at a spinoff on Atomictoy (RIP) had ever got going, the art was really great by the end of Buttlord. Plus they were growing out of edgy comedic homophobia in their later mini projects, before the website disappeared and they fell off the face of the earth.

Buttlord GT, a DBZ parody I somehow got into literally decades before I became a fan of the source material. A fair bit of the humor didn’t age well, but it had a knack for memorable “so dumb it’s brilliant” turns of phrase.

Jon Oringer, founder and executive chairman of Shutterstock @shutterstock.com, is trying to recruit comic and graphic novel creators over on LinkedIn to a new AI platform that he’s building. Feel free to let him (and them) know what you think of this, and never use Shutterstock again ✌🏻
A LinkedIn message from Jon Oringer that reads: "Hi Stephanie
I started Shutterstock 20 years ago. I'm now building an AI assisted comic-book/graphic-novel marketplace. I'm looking for founding creators on an invite-only basis who get paid based on engagement with their content. Let me know if want to check it out.
Jon

Jon Oringer"A reply to Jon from Stephanie Cooke that reads: "Hi Jon,

AI was illegally trained off of artists and creators, without their consent. And now those tools are being used to steal their styles and their years of hard work and education to create knock-offs that can’t begin to compare to what goes into art created by actual humans.

This is so incredibly misguided and makes an already predatory industry even harder for real artists to survive and thrive in.

I respect what you did with the creation of Shutterstock, but imagine if you were taken out of that equation entirely and someone just typed a prompt into an engine to create that site and product. It would be just as good as what you came up with, right?

This new endeavor is such a massive mistake and there’s not a single reputable creator who will attach their name to this. The creators that do come on board to promote AI are grifters who will only bring other grifters to your doorstep.

Best,
Stephanie"Two more messages (one from Jon and followed by one from Stephanie) in reply:

JON: "Thanks for your response - I understand where you are coming from, but at the same time disagree with a lot of your points.
Jon

Stephanie: "Hi Jon,

You can disagree with a lot of my points but one thing that is entirely undisputable is the fact that there is no ethical way to use AI. Whatever you create with it for comics and graphic novels has the potential to be tied up in copyright legal battles for years as creators continue to fight for compensation and against the violation of having their work uploaded without their permission.

So I guess it’s good that you (presumably) have a lot of money to throw away into the pit that is AI. You won’t return on investment, you won’t gain traction in the world of comics and graphic novels, and I can tell you now that in the mainstream industry, this won’t ever be taken seriously by the level of creators you need for this to succeed.

But again, it’s not my money to be wasted. However, the resources that you are using up to support AI are a massive problem that can’t be solved financially, and there won’t be anyone left to create art if you and other AI advocates destroy the planet.

-Stephanie"

John Carter (2012) is such a good pulpy sci-fi movie and the best of Disney’s post-Pirates, pre-buying Star Wars franchise nonstarters The large scale action in stunning, the production design is top tier, and its version of Dejah Thorris is in the upper echelon of 2010s Action Ladies
