Higher ed leaders are worried about the "decline of public trust"; what are they doing about the fact that faculty, students, and staff at their own institutions do not trust them to lead effectively, defend academic freedom, and meet the challenges of the moment?

The best image caption I have seen so far on Wikipedia. (To be fair, it's in the section about sending the newts to space but I still love the clarification.) 🧪
Two newts floating in water. The image caption reads "Iberian ribbed newts in an aquarium (on Earth)."

Good end-of-FY coverage by the Times. The amount of unspent funds has wiggled but it was pretty clear for some time now that NSF was simply not going to spend a substantial portion of its congressional appropriation this year.

The move, affecting about one-fifth of the National Science Foundation’s primary research budget, is the latest sign of how the White House is asserting more control over grants.

What stimulates regeneration programs in animals? @kenposs.bsky.social &co show that mutations causing #developmental defects activate #regeneration responses that buffer the deleterious effects of congenital disease in #zebrafish embryos. 🧪 buff.ly/jhUAiBu
Lateral views of stacked zebrafish larvae showing green fluorescent labeling concentrated in the head, spinal cord and tail tip. Green marks activation of an fgf20a enhancer trap in developing fin fold tissue of fras1 mutant zebrafish larvae, in which disruption of a gene mutated in Fraser syndrome destabilizes the fin fold epithelium. Regeneration programs that respond to injury are also deployed against damage arising from congenital genetic lesions, indicating a function in limiting developmental defects. A recurrent theme in this excellent story about China’s progress is that people there regard Trump as essential to their success, including his ability to drive scientific talent from the US www.newyorker.com/magazine/202...
In Beijing, a think tank at Renmin University recently published an assessment titled
"Thank Trump," which wryly hailed his efforts to hasten the "twilight of an empire," by undermining America's alliances, civil service, scientific institutions, and democratic credibility. In the past two years, the international approval rating of the U.S. has dropped nearly forty points, according to a worldwide survey by the Alliance of Democracies; in multiple polls, China now rates higher than the U.S.
