The Prairieland case is a perfect example of the "burn down a walmart" theory of change when you attempt to put it into action. Song says he intended it to be a warning shot, but you can't control what the bullet does after a warning shot. Don't fire at all. www.liberalcurrents.com/prairieland-...
On the evening of July 4, 2025, a collection of activists and protesters arrived at the Prairieland ICE detention facility in Alvarado, Texas. They performed a "noise protest," among other things setting off fireworks, in an attempt to signal to the detainees that they were not alone. Some individuals also slashed car tires and spray-painted "Ice Pig" and "Fuck you Pigs" on a car and a guard hut. ICE agents inside the facility called the local police, who responded. After an altercation, one protester—Benjamin Hanil Song—fired an AR-15 in the direction of a police officer. A bullet struck the officer in the neck, but did not kill him. Song and fifteen other activists were ultimately arrested, charged, and in June 2026 convicted by a jury of their peers of multiple charges, including material support of terrorism. Song was sentenced to 100 years in prison.

Much has been written about these events, whether about the morality of the activists' actions, the absurdity of referring to antifa as an "organization" let alone a terrorist one, or the strikingly long sentences handed down. The longest sentence handed down to any of the January 6 insurrectionists, for comparison, was 22 years.

I, like you, am tired of I-talked-to-a-Trump-voter-in-a-diner stories. But newly published research that involved weeks of contact with conservatives and their communities offered some novel insights that I hadn't considered. So I wrote about it. Gift link: shorturl.at/3FeaO

these focus groups are just further anecdotal evidence for my view that trump is is understood as a totem for wealth and prosperity. these people are genuinely bewildered that he isn’t, and might in fact be a human being with ulterior motives

After I shot this photo of Stephanie Tubbs at the #NoKings rally in Hattiesburg, I asked for her name. She hesitated, worried about how her family would react. "No problem," I told her, "We don't have to use your name." She paused. "Fuck it," she said, drawing cheers from the women around her.

Overthrowing a billionaire-backed fascist regime requires high bar, sustained, civil disobedience. And this requires connecting people into communities and showing we are the majority, our beliefs are the common sense norm. Both things are true.

Good evening. We estimate that between 4.2 and 7.6 million people turned out for the No Kings Day demonstrations held around the country on Saturday. This makes Oct 18 very likely the biggest single-day U.S. protest event since 1970. www.gelliottmorris.com/p/second-no-...

Unsurprisingly, Rs are releasing montage videos that combine Dems calling for protests with footage of WayMos burning = ie, THIS is what they called for. But we're about to have a ton of peaceful protests that clarify what Dems are calling for.

Beyond the clearly ridiculous framing, the fact that this is a push alert is just obscene. If I shared analysis like this at work, I'd no longer be allowed to share analysis.
NYT push alert saying: "Accepting a $400 million jet from the Qatari royal family is the latest example of how President Trump is blowing through traditional guardrails."

The message from the Left should be: tariffs bad, industrial policy good. Sure, there are niche cases where tariffs might be useful as part of industrial policy, but it really weakens the message to add qualifiers. Fight unreservedly against the thing destroying the economy.

Really interesting evidence that economic evolution that moves faster than accompanying social evolution can cause significant societal upheaval. Feels intuitive ofc but good to be backed up and especially in such a high stakes case.

Having worked in Dem fundraising: A) this is very real and we should stop doing it B) The issue isn't Actblue - political donations become public record by law so an industry exists which scrapes this information and sells it to campaigns. Campaigns also sell/trade their donor lists to each other.

better than a muscular competitor to the NYT/WSJ/WaPo you could stand up progressive-leaning content outlets that cover sports, cooking, tech, celebrity news etc. that would be more useful for reaching low-info voters and also make you money while you're at it.

I think there's a relatively straightforward moral justification for non-maximally efficient giving to local causes - direct responsibility - but a lot of the criticism of EA (including some of the folks quoted here) shows that folks give because they want to FEEL good, not DO good.

When I was a cook in Chicago, I could live a 10 minute walk from my workplace. In NYC, I could live in the same borough as my workplace b/c I shared a 1bd with a partner and the subway runs 24/7. Now that I live in the bay, I have no idea how I would make it work as a cook in SF.

This is also the source of the fury directed at private equity: dentists, vets, etc. have been underpricing services for years and years and we all built our lives to rely on that. Part of the trouble is that it's hard to ascribe meaningful blame to anyone involved - its a systems issue!

A take I'm becoming more convinced of is that simplifying modern living through policy should be a larger focus of the left. You're not going to get electoral credit for pushing through IRS Direct File, but it could give everyday people more bandwidth for civic engagement.

This is really well done - the Harris campaign was more successful than people want to believe, but the struggles of the Dem party going forward are likely more serious than people want to believe. The commentary on institutions is particularly insightful IMO.
