I'm arguably a much "worse" person since transitioning. I'm more assertive, I put less effort into things I don't find important, I'm more likely to say mean shit, I write horror smut. I don't know how much is the external influence of a hostile world and what's the Real Me. I know I'm happier.

If I sit down for more than 30 seconds, Scuppers is climbing me for snuggles. She comes to greet me when I come home from work. She's literally so sweet, and multiple "I'm not really a cat person" people have told me how much they loved interacting with her. Hate cats? Skill issue.

Dueling accusations of abuse are not uncommon in abusive relationships. If the victim fights back or buckles under the pressure and acts in self-destructive or reckless ways this is characterized as them having been the perpetrator all along. Johnny Depp and Amber Heard is one prominent case.

As a survivor reading between the lines of this very carefully written story it sounds like Jonathan McKinsey was a trans man in an abusive and controlling marriage who was targeted for violence repeatedly by his ex-wife and her parents and eventually murdered. But as a reporter? I can't be sure.

I think with kids and teens especially, being real with them about, like, "It's okay to be scared or confused, but that doesn't make it okay to do nothing. If something is going down that doesn't feel right, here's how you can get others to help you stop it," etc. is important. Hell, adults too

Effective bystander intervention is something that has to be taught, imo. In the heat, chaos, or uncertainty of a moment, I think unless people have intentionally thought about what they would do in X situation, we're liable to freeze/ignore. And it should be framed as communal, not a one hero thing
